I enjoy making beats. It's one my most favorite things to do, and it's also something that I have grown to become pretty good at. Creating your own beats can be done in so many different ways provided that there are many different avenues that you can take to make your own beats, so from the get go, you need to decide what method of beat creation you would like to consider as your own, and subsequently master it!
If you enjoy hip hop music, and you want to be a part of the intricate and enjoyable creation process of making beats like the ones that YOU enjoy listening to, then I suggest that you get started today by following these simple to execute beat making tips.
Dissect Your Favorite Tracks
If you're new to making beats, you may not know where to start, or what to start with concerning instrument selection, tempo, and arrangement. The way that I learned to combat this problem was to take a few songs that I thought were hot at the moment, back then it was The Game ft. 50 Cent “How We Do”. I would put that song on repeat in my Ipod, and then I would count the number of bars that were within the verse, the chorus, the bridge, and the outro.
Also, I took note of the instruments that were used within the beat, when they came in/out of the track, and for how many bars those instruments would play within their respective verse or chorus. Then, I would try to apply that information to re-create the beat as closely as I could, or I would try to make an entirely new beat based on that information.
This does take time, but this exercise is well worth the effort put forth, it will pay you in dividends as far as your beat making skills are concerned.
Learn To Play Some Keys
Learning how to play the piano and getting an understanding of music theory under your belt will help you to better create any idea that comes to mind, and then execute that idea musically. Most times people struggle with making the beats that they want to, simply because they can't play the piano!
Most piano teachers teach classical piano. If you want to take lessons for the sake of learning how to play keys like you hear on the songs that you enjoy listening to, the songs that you hear on the radio, you will need to learn how to play pop piano. Good luck on finding an instructor to teach it to you!
But on the real, I know of this book entitled “The Pop Piano Book” by Mark Harrison, following through this book will teach you exactly how to play the piano in the styles that you hear on the radio. Classical piano training just does not really apply for those who want to create hip hop beats or R&B beats.
Mix and Complete Your Beats
You don't need to be an audio engineer to mix your beats like a pro. Topics like compression and limiting may be foreign to you, but after reading Mike Senior's “Mixing Secrets for The Small Studio” you will damn near be a professional audio engineer. I like this book because it is written from the perspective that you know nothing about mixing audio, and it's not specific to one particular DAW, these tips and instructions can be applied to any DAW of your choice. Selecting your instruments, playing and arranging your drums and instruments, and then making it all sound cohesive and complete by mixing and applying effects is how you go about making commercially acceptable beats.
You can do it, there's no point in thinking that you can't. Choose a DAW, study and practice these beat making tips, and get on your way to beat making stardom. It's all in the game, and you're winning... Better Beats Ahead.
