Hip Hop Beat Maker – Who’s Your Favorite Producer, And Who Inspired You to Make Beats?

Every aspiring hip hop beat maker has a music producer’s style that they particularly enjoy, and that same producer more than likely is the main influential driving force that made you want to become a hip hop beat maker in the first place.

For me, I just might have too many favorites and influential producers to only name just one, so I’ll lay down a few from my list, discuss each producer, and some of the techniques that they utilize that I have learned from, and try to include in my own productions. Let’s get started.

Dr Dre.

I wonder if Dr. Dre is the first producer on everyone’s favorite hip hop beat maker producer list? The reason he’s first on my list, is because I think that Dr. Dre was the first producer that I recognized to be a music producer, once I recognized that music producer was the term used to describe the process of making a rap beat, and getting someone to rap on them. Of course, the job of a producer may be a little more elaborate than what I described, but for me, that was the basic definition.

Back in 92’ when I first heard Dre’s album The Chronic for the very first time, I knew for sure that I wanted to make music. I was hooked! Being about 10 years old at the time, all that gangsta rap was alluring to say the least. Thank God I could differentiate reality from entertainment. But The Chronic album was a defining moment in my life, and “Ain’t Nothing but a “G” Thang” is one of my favorite songs of all time.

What I have learned from Dre is that you have to evolve and grow, both as a man and as a musician. No one is meant to stay in the same place forever, just peep the old Dre vs. the current day Dr. Dre. Stark differences. So I’ll continue to push the envelope with my productions, just as Dre does on a continuous basis.

Mannie Fresh

Mannie Fresh was the first producer that I knew of, to single handedly produce a slew of albums within one year for all of the artists on one label. From Juvenile, to Lil Wayne, to B.G., to The Big Tymers and The Hot Boys, the one man band and the one sound was all Mannie's work. And talk about work ethic! Cool thing about it, everybody couldn’t wait for a new Cash Money release, and every time the beats sounded fresh and innovative. Perfected country rap tunes courtesy of the maestro Mannie Fresh.

What I learned from Mannie Fresh is that you gotta have drive and determination, and you gotta keep a humble and lighthearted approach to making beats, even when you’re already a superstar.

Organized Noize

Pat Murray, Rico Wade, and Sleepy Brown were the men responsible for bringing Outkast to the game, they are also responsible as well through their contributions of solely producing music for Outkast and Goodie Mob in the early nineties for putting Atlanta on the map as a respectable and viable hip hop music hub.

You can’t deny that Outkast's first album entitled“Southernplaylisticadillacmuzik” is not only a southern classic, but a classic hip hop album as well; and Organized Noize produced that album, as well as Outkast’s sophomore album entitled “ATLiens” and Goodie Mob’s debut album album entitled “Soul Food” in their entirety. Heavy live instrumentation is present on all of those albums, but they still maintain a street edge within every track that they produce that makes those tracks Cadillac and strip club worthy.

I take from Organized Noize their incorporation of soul music into hip hop production, and I also try to incorporate the collaborative approach that they use to production into my own music. I just haven’t found the right partner, yet.

The Dream

If you’re not familiar with Mr. Umbrella, ella, ella, ay, ay ay ay, eh; you better get to know who he is, because apparently he is definitely here to stay. As mentioned, he is the songwriter and producer of Rhianna’s hit single Umbrella, as well as a slew of other hits for artists such as Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, and Usher, as well as his own extremely successful solo career to note. The Dream’s style in my opinion can be described as some ghetto R&B fused with techno, 80's synth pop and funk; which is the perfect recipe for a platinum sound in my opinion.

The Dream’s heavy use of synths and 808 drums have greatly inspired me to better fuse my own incorporation of synths into my music, and to pay heavy attention and focus to my piano playing and melodic arrangements. If you have listened to any of his albums, whether Love vs. Hate; Love vs. Money, or Love King; you’ll see for yourself that the Dream’s sound is heavily inspired by synthesized technology, as well as incorporating the old with the new. This is what makes The Dream probably my favorite producer of them all, and my own sound is greatly influenced by his. I pray that I can one day have a career half as successful as his.

I can go on and on about my favorite music producers and what I like about them and their music. I hope that one day I myself will be on someone’s favorites list; Lord knows that I’m working to make that happen. Keep pushing and never give up on your dreams, and do your best to work at becoming the hip hop beat maker that has ever done it. It can happen… Better Beats Ahead.
