Once upon a time, way before MY time, if you wanted to become a hip hop beats maker, you needed to have some serious dough or some awesome pull to be able to get up in one of the major studios, just to be able to even breathe the same air that the artists were breathing. You had to earn the right to share their same space!
None of this is the the case nowadays, simply because you can make beats from the comfort of your own bedroom, provided you have the right software. No more kissing booty and carrying coffee trying to get an internship nowadays homey! All you have to do now is get yourself a computer, some headphones, a MIDI keyboard, and some beat making software, and you'll be in like Flynn! You can become a hip hop beats maker in absolutely no time at all! Oh yeah, by the way, who is Flynn exactly?
So you want to make beats, you want to make beats fast, and you don't want to spend a lifetime trying to learn how to do it. And you probably don't have a lot of money to spend on getting a setup going either? Don't worry, we'll take care of you!
First of all, there are a few online free beat makers that you can utilize to get started making beats, but I can almost guarantee that you will be done with those after day one, simply because for lack of a better term, they suck. You won't be making anything that sounds remotely close to the beats that you hear on the radio, so let's not even waste our time there.
Then you have those beat makers that are extremely professional, but also extremely expensive. Sure, you can make your beats with those too, but at what cost? Three pints of blood and your lunch money for a week? I don't need you passing out here, dying trying to get yourself some hip hop beats maker equipment.
So how do you go about finding a beat maker that's worthwhile, so that you can make beats fast? Well a few that I know of, like Sonic Producer, Dub Turbo, or FL Studio all have low price points, but at the same time they do not skimp you on features or quality. And that's for sure.
So once you choose your hip hop beat maker, it's now all a matter of getting down and making some beats. For examples sake, I like to sit down and try to re-create my favorite tracks, that's a quick and dirty way to get some beat making skill under your belt. The long drawn out way would require that you learn some much theory, and study up on the artistic aspect of becoming a hip hop beat maker, but I remember, we're trying to do this in under ten minutes or less.
Start with a cool sounding loop. Your choice of beat making software will come with a library of loops, and if you don't like any of the ones you have available, try going to Google and searching for "royalty free hip hop loops". You can quickly build up your loop library this way.
After you find a loop, add some drums. Either you can find another drum loop that closely matches the tempo of your instrumental loop, or you can go about creating your own drum pattern. Almost all music is written in 4/4 time, which means 4 beats per measure. 1&2&3&4&, that's one measure counted out.
Your snares or claps will go on the 2 and the 4, and your kicks will go however you see fit, play with it until something sticks and sounds cool. Bam. I told you that we would make beats in 10 minutes or less.
You have your instrumental loop going, you have your drum pattern going, and now you have a hip hop beat! Whether or not it's dope will be left up to your ears, don't lie to yourself now! Your first beats won't be the best, we all sounded awful in the beginning. But if you keep at it, and work on making a beat or two everyday, I can guarantee that you'll be well on your way to being the best hip hop beats maker that ever did it, next to me of course.
That's cool, I don't mind sharing the spotlight. the only thing that shines brighter than me is the sun… You better know that! Better Beats Ahead.
