How To Make A Beat – Six Steps To Follow That Will Take You From Newbie To Super Producer!

Anyone can make it in the music production/ beat making game, once they learn how to make a beat the right way, the tight way. If you are a newbie beat maker and you have been searching for some info that will help you learn how to make a beat, and crafting tracks just like the great Kanye West, the great Timbaland, or even the great artist slash producer known as The Dream (for all you aspiring Pop/R&B producers out there) I’m gonna give you a few steps and tips that you can follow that will allow you to learn how to make a beat, simply and stress free. No stress, no seeds, just that sticky icky icky! Ooooh Weee!

  • Choose a Software Beat Making Program

This is probably the simplest part of the tutorial; get this one right and you will understand how to make a beat in no time. You will need a software beat making program, such as Dub Turbo, Sonic Producer, FL Studio, or Reason so that you can sequence all of your tracks. The software beat making machine will be the brain or the center of your operation. The aforementioned software applications are all geared towards hip hop music production and are perfect for beat making.

  • Build Yourself A Library of Samples

This is for the purpose of complementing the already included sound libraries that come with your software beat machine. There are websites all over the internet that offer hip hop drum samples and sound fonts, or you can do like I do and collect all types of records and CD’s to sample drums and hits and stabs from. Once you’re comfortable and you understand how to make a beat with ease, having a large library of samples to use will offer some fresh innovation within your productions.

  • Learn the Fundamentals

Sequencing and arranging, song structure, chords, scales, and melodies; these are the fundamental concepts of how to make a beat that you should focus on and commit to memory. Again, there are probably hundreds of websites on the internet that are dedicated to each topic, just Google each one and get your study on.

  • Practice What You Learn

Reading about the fundamentals of how to make a beat all day won’t get you anywhere, you will need to put what you learn in theory to practice. Making beats every living day of your life is the only way that you will become a super producer. There is no shortcut. Through practice and dedication, you’ll get there.

  • Fake It Until You Make It

Well, this tips works well for some producers, while it frustrates most others. You should copy those songs or those producers that you like and enjoy listening to, by trying to remake their songs as closely as you can. A lot of dudes get frustrated because they can’t re-create the song exactly as it was done by the original producer, but that’s not the point of the practice. The point is for you to copy them so that you can learn song structuring: intros, verses, choruses, breaks, bridges, and outro’s. You can see and hear where the producers used different instruments and drum patterns, how many bars those patterns lasted, at what bars the vocals came in and or out, etc. This is invaluable practice for anybody learning how to make a beat.

  • Start at Step Two, Then Rinse and Repeat

Doing the whole process over and over again will put you on your feet, and after awhile you won’t need to practice, you’ll be able to just sit down at your computer and create whatever comes to mind. Make learning how to make a beat a fun and chilled out journey, don’t take it too seriously that you give up. All of us sounded awful in the beginning, because we were learning! But once you get the hang of it, I have no doubt that you will be slanging beats, and slapping hands with the hip hop greats. You can do it, I know it’s in ya…
