Are you aware of the role that technology plays in today’s music production community? There has never been a better time than now to learn to make hip hop beats, as the resources on the internet are in abundance, and many of the software beat production programs have music production tutorials built in, or even total websites dedicated to learning music production, specifically for your chosen software program.
With this type of leverage, there’s no reason why you too can’t grab the world by the ankles and shake the paper out of it! It’s almost like your being begged to come and learn how to make beats, have fun doing it, and even get some money in the process. Let’s rap about it.
Know Your Limitations, Stay in Your Lane
Let’s talk limitations here. Now when I speak of limitations, I mean the current scope of where you are in life, such as are you in college, are you a full time student, are you a full time employee, are you able to dedicate countless hours day after day to learning how to make beats?
For instance, a parent with two children and a full time job won’t necessarily have the same time as a part time college student with no job. So with that said, you don’t want to get in over your head with buying lots of gear. Keep them stacks in your pocket until it won’t hurt you to spend a stack or two on some new equipment.
Every piece of equipment has a learning curve, so I would recommend that you pick one piece of gear, preferably a software beat making application, and master that application until you know it like the back of your hand. That way, you will be more likely to stick to learning production and keeping with it when you reach bumps in the road; the gradual progress to learning music production and acquiring gear is the best way to go about doing things.
Now that we have that out of the way, it’s time to discuss how you should go about making your beats. I made mention earlier that you should choose a software beat making application, and I say that because there are some stellar software music production applications on the market that can easily replace a studio full of hardware gear.
Don’t believe me? Take at some YouTube videos of guys making heat with nothing more than a computer and a MIDI keyboard. With the right tools and some beta making skill (which you can and will acquire in time), you can make tracks that sound as if you have a full backing band at your disposal.
Obviously the software beat making approach will be highly effective and efficient, focusing on the operation of one program vs. having multiple pieces of gear like a keyboard, mixer, MPC, compressors, samplers, and hard disk recorders to tackle would make you a more fluent producer, faster.
I hope that I have added some insight into how you can get started with making music, and as well as a lil direction even if you were lost. Get to it, because it don’t stop… Better beats ahead.
