Left-handed Musicians

I have tried music lessons. Of course, in the beginning, piano and guitar lessons were the most obvious. I even at one point tried the flute, being influenced in my younger days by the immortal Jethro Tull. Yet, as much as I practiced, pinged, plucked and poofed on and into these instruments, it all became just too much hard work for very little return. I didn't want to play Mary Had a Little Lamb! I wanted to play Mozart... and I wanted to play it NOW! Basically, I stunk!

There are those whose sheer passion for music itself somehow carries them through the frustration of a beginner, the callouses, the hours of hard work. I have great admiration for them, I am in awe of them. I am not one of them. While I accept my fate (and turn on the radio) my envy and sadness at my lack of what it takes saddens me.

Which brings me to the purpose of my ramblings here.

The right hemisphere of the brain, which in left-handed people is dominant, controls music, art, creativity. So why are most easily available musical instruments designed for use by right-handed people?

I don't know about anyone else, but I have always envied those individuals who have a “natural” talent for music. We all know someone like that. They can pick up any instrument and just seem to know how to make it do what it was designed to do.

I have one friend (left-handed) who can't read a note of music and yet can pick up virtually any instrument and not only get the darned thing to work, but after only a few minutes of familiarizing himself with it, can play any song that comes into his head. He simply learned as a child to flip his guitar over and play the strings upside down.

Jimi Hendrix and Paul McCartney (you might recognize the names), both left-handed, played right-handed guitars that were flipped and restrung.

Want to know about other left-handed guitarists and musicians? All you need do is a Google search and I think you might be a bit surprised. I know I was. Ah, that lovely right hemisphere of the brain! Fortunately, left-handed guitars and instruments are easily available on-line these days. Unfortunately, I still can't play any of them (turning that radio up just a bit).

The passion and ability for playing music seems to have no boundaries. There is no left side or right side, only a talent fueled by passion.
