Spotify is one of the greatest creations in recent years. I actually only discovered it a few days ago. I've been listening to Pandora for a couple months now, and though I had hear about Spotify, I had never actually used it. How is it that I'm so out of the loop? Well, I live in China, and have for the past 5 years. There's free music everywhere in China - just not the western kind. Seeing as I'm not into Chinese Pop and Beijing Opera, discovering Spotify and Pandora was AMAZING. But wait, how to I listen to Spotify and Pandora outside The USA?
Well, Pandora is only available in The USA. Pandora is great because you can use it to discover new artists. It's probably the most difficult hurdle for the avid music listener to overcome - discovering new music outside your "circle of friends", and without paying thousands of dollars checking out CD's that are probably going to be lame.
But outside The USA (or without a US IP, as you'll find out below), you're out of luck. No Pandora access for you!
And Spotify fills another gap in a music lovers world. Access to a huge database of music from anywhere. Sure, well all know one guy who downloads any torrent he can get his hands on and has a 3 terabyte hard drive that he drags wherever he goes. Do you really want to invest all that time and money into an illegal music collection?
So Spotify gives you more music than you can ever listen to - legally, conveniently, and best of all, for free. It's available in The US, The UK, and a few other places including Australia and some western and North European countries. If you're outside these places, you're out of luck, sort of.
How do I listen to Spotify and Pandora abroad? Get to the point!
So you can change the IP address of your phone and computer. You can actually change it to any country in the world, but to hit two birds with one stone, I would suggest a US IP address. You'll get access to Pandora and Spotify. If you're from Spain, and have a Spotify account in Spain, you might want to get a Spanish IP. However, the paid version of Spotify allows you to go abroad, and the free version just needs Facebook account, so you can create a Facebook account and get access to the free version.
How do you change your IP address?
The best way is with a VPN. A virtual private network (VPN) is used for private surfing online, among other things. All you have to do is sign up for a VPN service with VPN servers in the country you want an IP address from, sign into a server, and you're good to go. You can install one on your phone and/or computer, and there's no extra hardware necessary. That means you can access Pandora and Spotify within minutes of signing up.
If you want to get a US IP, you need to get a service with VPN servers in The USA. If you want a UK IP, you need a service with servers in The UK. Some services make you choose between server locations, and others give you free reign of all their servers, as well as free switching, which means you'll be able to access restricted sites from a number of places around the world.
But wait, there's more!
With an American IP, you'll also get access to Hulu and Netflix. With a British IP, you'll also be able to access BBC iPlayer and ITV! Know of a country that blocks your IP? Get an IP address from there and you can access all those local sites.
