Make Beats At Home - Turn That Spare Room Into A Chart Topping Production Center

I can't think of a better time than now to get started with creating your own personal beat making/audio production factory at home, I mean, if you would like to make beats at home, the tools and necessary gear are all out there to be had at a moment's notice.

If you haven't noticed, there has been a major influx of pop superstars that have come onto the scene in recent years, like Soulja Boy and Justin Beiber. They both got started by creating their own music at home, publishing it and doing self promotion on YouTube, and voila, the next big thing has been created before our eyes. Now who's to say that the next up can't be you? I'm certain that you can make it happen if you get some gear together and work daily at executing a plan that will propel yourself into stardom.

Where Should You Start?

I would recommend that you start by gathering the necessary gear for beatmaking and audio production, like getting a computer, a digital audio workstation, a microphone, audio interface, and either a keyboard that has sounds within it, or just a MIDI keybard to control your DAW (digital audio workstation). The computer and the DAW are the most important two pieces of the puzzle, as they both will be the brains and the heartbeat of your operation. Some of the major DAW's are Pro Tools, Logic Studio, Reason, FL Studio, Dub Turbo, Sonar, Cubase, and Ableton Live. As you can see the options are plentiful, so it would be best that you experiment with demo's and see which one will agree with your workflow before you outright settle on just one or two. DAW's ain't cheap; with the exception of Dub Turbo and FL Studio, so choose wisely.

Learn The Ins and Out's of Music Production

There are a few topics that you will need to learn and study within the grand scope of music production, like learning to play the piano, audio engineering, how to sequence beats, and sound design; all with the intention of making you a more capable and professional music producer or artist. We live in a do it yourself era, where often times the artist is also the producer, engineer, songwriter, and performer, so all of these hats will have to be juggled by one person, which is YOU!

Don't fret though, there are a multitude of good books and resources on the internet that deal with each topic specifically, so if you do your research, you can easily get up and running and sound like a professional while doing it if you set forth some good effort.

  • For learning to play piano, I would recommend Mark Harrison's Pop Piano book. You will learn how to create your own chord progressions and melodies.
  • For audio engineering, Mike Senior's Mixing Secret's For The Small Studio will help you to perfect those audio mixing skills.
  • I don't think that there is a better teacher for learning how to sequence beats than to listen to your favorite tracks on repeat, and learning to count bars within the songs and taking notes on what's happening within the song and when it happens.
  • And as far as sound design goes, do a search for "Sound Design in Reason" on YouTube for tutorials on how to make your own sounds. Stock sound libraries will only take you so far. Being able to create your own sounds will place you in a league of your own.

So there it is, I have created the blueprint for you to lay your own foundation to becoming a music production superstar; if you create a plan and work at it daily, I have no doubt that you will succeed. Get to it... Better Beats Ahead.
