For many songwriters, the ability to write a hit record from nothing but a vision in their minds is a God given talent, a gift. I wasn't blessed with that talent, and maybe you weren't either, but you shouldn't let that delay you from wanting to make your own song. Trust me, there are more than enough resources on the web for free to help point you in the right direction.
I'll share with you some of the ones that I know of that have worked for me, and also some key pointers that have worked and do work time after time. Follow these steps, and I'm sure I'll see your name in the bright lights in no time!
The Idiot's Guide To Songwriting
This is a really cool book, and I have read it from cover to cover, twice. It gives you pointers on how to structure your lyrics and also how to create melodies with words, along with proper word phrasing as well. Joel Hirschorn is the author, and he speaks from his stance of being an award winning songwriter, and he also offers pointer for coming up with titles. I think that if you want to start writing your own lyrics to go along with your beats (which is a good idea, it's always good to pitch complete songs, especially to R&B artists) The Idiot's Guide to Songwriting will be a good starting point for your songwriting efforts.
When you Write, Write About Your Life Experiences
Or the life experiences of others that you know. This is a concept that has worked extremely well, just look at Mary J. Blige's career and the newly found star studded career of Adele. Writing their lyrics from the hurt and pain of their personal love lives and life experiences have made them platinum selling artists time and time again. I'm sure you have some pain to write about! Or you know someone who does, like Bobby Womack says. He took "If You Think You're Lonely Now, Wait Until Tonight" from an experience he witnessed his friend having firsthand, and made it a hit song. You can do it too.
Or write about joy! Or wrote about how you're always broke, or how you see your ex girlfriend dating your current best friend (you always knew they had something going). You can do it! Your life is the canvas that you can use to write and draw inspiration upon, share your thoughts and feelings from a genuine place and I guarantee that you will win with writing your own songs.
If you learn to combine your own beats with your own lyrics, your ability to pitch complete songs to artists and labels will set you apart within a league of your own. Those royalty and publishing checks will be quite nice too, you may not know it, but the money is in the publishing baby. Writing your own tracks and producing your own beats is definitely the way you want to go.
So check it, I have provided you with a reference book to help you plant your feet within the songwriting world, and I have also told you where you can get an infinite amount of inspiration from, so what are you waiting for? Get started with songwriting and making those beats today!
