Making A Rap Beat – Five Tried And True Techniques That Will Ensure That Your Beats Bang!

Making a rap beat requires a level of finesse, a level of street savvy that just any old ordinary cat might not have within them. To be quite frank, making a rap beat is definitely all about being in tune with what is going on in the streets, the streets provide the pulse to what we know as hip hop music. Hip hop is more than just music, it's a lifestyle, so the sooner you get in tune with what they streets are doing, saying, and watching; your beats and your production will be more authentic, more trill. Up your street IQ.

So with that said, let's discuss a few tried and true techniques associated with making a rap beat aside from being in tune with the streets, that are more within the production scope of things. Let's rap.

1. Choose Quality Software

Making a rap beat is very much so about getting out what you put in, for example, garbage in, garbage out. Awful sounds in, awful sounds out. So, a strong consideration and reserve should be taken into account when choosing which software you want to use for your hip hop productions, choose one that has dope sounds and easy to use navigation. You should start out strong, so a good footing with your production software will only help you in this aspect.

2. Invest in a Pair of Studio Quality Headphones

While most newbie producers cannot afford appropriate studio monitors and the required sound isolation foam necessary to get an accurate mix, a good pair of studio headphones can and will make all of the difference when making a rap beat. I'll put it to you like this, a weak pair of $200 studio monitors will in no way compare to a pair of $200 studio headphones, which is pretty much the price range you wanna stay in for audiophile headphones. You want to be able to have transparent mixes, where in which you can hear the full audio spectrum, which on the other hand if you had some cheaper monitors, more than likely they will lack a good bass response, and you would over compensate for that lack. The headphones will have an excellent bass response, and you will be able to mix better while making a rap beat. So, save your money and invest in the best pair of headphones you can afford, instead of settling for cheaper monitors. Your ears will thank you for it.

3. On the Production Tip, Make about Five Beats Per Day

This will allow you to sharpen your skills when making a rap beat. I don't care if all five of those beats suck, save them, and make five more the next day. In doing this, you will soon learn where you are lacking with your production technique, and you will be able to adjust from there. Maybe you're tight with the drum patterns, but your melodies suck? Or you struggle with melodies altogether? This would be an indication that you need to practices some piano fundamentals such as scales and chords. Or everything sounds either too loud, too soft, or just not clear enough? This would indicate that you need to focus on learning more about mixing. Making five beats per day will set you on the path to production perfection in no time. I got that lil' tip spending time at Patchwerk Studios in Atlanta.

4. Build yourself a sample library of nothing but Drums and Vocal Hits

I'm talking about taking drums from everywhere man! From current songs, from old songs, from rock songs, pop songs, soul songs. You never, ever, ever want to have ol' stale a** drums, drums that have been used over and over by other producers who might be using the very same software that you are using when making a rap beat. I combat this by sampling as many drums as I can per day, and just building a library. It's easier to sample and trim a one shot kick or snare, but sometimes you will want to sample a loop. However you see fit, just do it. Do this for vocal samples too. Get creative. Get money!

5. Learn to Layer Acoustic Instruments With Synthesized Ones

This is a lil secret of mine I probably should not have let up, but hey, I wanna see you shine! Plus, I'm constantly re-inventing myself, so it doesn't really matter. I stay making a rap beat that's fire! But anyway, for the tip, layer acoustic sounds such as say an acoustic guitar with a short sine wave, and throw a lil reverb and distortion on it and see what you get. You'll get something that is totally cool sounding and dope baby! I said this to say that you should experiment with layering all kinds of sounds when making a rap beat, this way your sound won't be duplicated, and no one will be able to exactly pin point what you did to create your sound. Playing with sound design while making a rap beat is an excellent way to keep a fresh, innovative twist on them beats you're pumping out.

Take heed to what I'm telling you my friend, making a rap beat ain't exactly rocket science, but there is a level of intricacy there. But if you put it down like I'm telling you and work at it daily, I have no doubt that you'll be winning in no time... Better Beats Ahead.
