Making Hip Hop Beats - Trill Trackmaking Tips For The Super Producer In You!

Hip hop music production has to be absolutely THE flyest profession that anyone in the music production community could ever partake in, and as you may or may not know, there are some very dope producers that are making hip hop beats in the game; simply killing it with some of the most awesome beats and compositions that you have ever heard of.

So if you're trying to get into making hip hop beats, or you're new to production as a whole, I would like to share some tips and tricks that I use in my productions that'll have you sampling like Kanye, flipping them chords like Dr. Dre, and keepin your drums knockin like Drumma Boy!

But I gotta warn you, these tips ain't for the faint at heart, so if having hot tracks and all of the spoils of life that comes along with being a platinum producer scares you, like, you know, the money, the cars and clothes, champagne flows, women... You know how it goes. Word to Biggie. Follow these tips, and the success will follow.

Switch Up Your Drums Regularly

Dope drums are the foundation of every hip hop beat, and often times the drums might get more notice in the track than the artist rapping on the beat itself. You already know, you've heard a beat that was so tight that the rap verse was forgettable, I know I have. But the pointer that I'm trying to share with you about the drums, is the point that when you are producing, use variation in your choice of kicks, snares and claps at all times.

I don't that it is wise as a hip hop producer for you to stick to one sound or one style of production, and this point believe it or not can be attributed to the choice of drums that you use in your tracks alone. If you continuously seek out and try out new and different drum sounds and patterns, what you will find is that it's easier to keep reinventing yourself, and you will become a more multifaceted producer that can produce music across multiple genres. It's all in the drums man, dope beats that is, so keep them drums hot and fresh like butter n' biscuits baby. Or a new girlfriend every weekend. You get my drift.

Think Outside The Box When Sampling

Have you ever heard "I Wanna Rock (Doo Doo Brown)" by Luther Campbell, aka uncle Luke? Well that track was produced by Devastator X, who was largely responsible for many of those early 90's Miami Bass booty songs and productions that were put out by acts like Luke and the 2 Live Crew, and JT Money and the Poison Clan.

If you listen to the song, that main snare that is driving the beat is actually not a snare, but it's the sound of a toilet seat dropping! Pretty freaking awesome example of thinking outside of the box concerning sampling ideas if you ask me! Not only did he come up with what sounded like a cold sounding snare/clap, he came up with something that was different and totally innovative. Think like this when creating your own samples.

Learn and Memorize All 12 of the Piano Scales

If you learn and memorize all 12 of the scales, there will be no chord or melody idea that comes to your mind that you will not be able to express musically. Chords and melodies are the basic foundation of any hip hop beat, therefore, if you know all of your scales, you will be able to produce more musical and harmonically correct tracks.

Now as a side note, with music creation, there is no right or wrong way that music should be created, if it sounds good to your ears, it is indeed good music! But if you know those chords and scales, you can create music effortlessly that sounds "correct", and thus it will feel "better". Learning those scales and chords will put you in the game fast. You'll see.

So, you got your drums, you have your samples, and you can play those keys. You now have the ingredients to create any and every kind of hip hop beat that comes to mind. You can produce music until you don't wanna hear music no more, which is forever because you'll never wanna stop hearing music! The music don't stop, and neither will you.

Hold it down y'all til the break of dawn... Better Beats Ahead.
