Yes yes yall..and it don't stop....
Well, for us guys who were kids in the 80's it's another end of an era. Long-time great and Beastie Boy Adam Yauch (MCA) died yesterday.
It seems some kind of cancer of his parotid gland is what finally killed the icon. That's really all I know about it, because I'm not some ghoul who wants to sit and talk about cancer.
I know nothing of cancer. Cancer is terrible. That is the extent of my knowledge.
I will also not sit here like some obsessed and delusional fan who is going to pretend like I lost my son today. MCA was and will always be simply awesome, and that is the absolute extent of what I know about the man.
If you were a kid in the late 80's you no doubt remember MCA, Mike D and the King Ad-rock drinking beer, partying like we all wanted to and singing some seriously cool ass songs.
Some people tried to write the Beasties off as some white fluke in rap, but let's face it...they were/are great and they did a whole lot for what rap music is today. If you don't believe that, then I guess you can enjoy listening to whatever terrible rap music you listen to today that is as unoriginal as most of the articles that will be written today about MCA.
But for those of us who were there, and grew up on the Beastie Boys and all of the wacky ass things they were always up to, today really is pretty sad.
And I'm not so sure it's about the normal thing you know. I mean, sure it's really awful that cancer is still running wild in the world and that it takes so many lives, no doubt about that.
But for me, someone who has no value of what cancer does to people, I only know that I feel like the things I've loved in life are withering away and becoming old, decrepit and fragile.
Everything I once loved was young, hip and as awesome as it could get. Now it's all been replaced by a society full of people who think watching idiots on TV acting like wannabe weekend warrior, steroid-ridden douchebags is the new cool.
For us guys who still can appreciate that it should take some actual talent to get somewhere in life, and especially in the entertainment industry, this is disheartening.
MCA was one of the true cool guys. No doubt about it, he had the cool voice, the cool lines in all of the Beastie Boys songs, and he was the official "tough guy" of the group...if not for anything other than his raspy voice.
I don't know about all of these people who will stand outside his New York City home and cry over his death. I don't know about all of the people who will try to make it seem like they lost their entire family today.
I don't know about that because I think it's absurd to think of a guy like MCA as being anything more than what he was. And to me, he was a super cool guy who was a great musician, activist and person.
I know very little of his real life behind the scenes, and I won't pretend to be broken up beyond belief at how he is no longer here.
But I will miss MCA Adam Yauch because he was an icon to me growing up. He is the ultimate symbol for the fact that I am getting old, and it sucks.
My idols are dying, getting old and in some cases no longer relevant to the majority of the target demographic in this world. What a shame.
I'll be just fine though. I won't be attending any memorials. I will not be posting on Facebook of how I just can't believe it, and "he was soooo young OMG".
B-E-A-S-T-I-E Boy MCA is dead, and there's not thing I can do except remember how truly awesome he was.
