Megadeath - Supercollider - album Review

Megadeth released its fourteenth instalment, ‘Super Collider’ in June this year. Set all your expectations down as you spin this record, and accept that this not going to be a rock out, it’s a ‘sit through’. After having created exceptional pieces of work like Endgame, signalling a real comeback by the band, since its death after Risk, all that Mustaine has done successfully is take a huge dump on it by following it up with something below their standard like Super Collider.

The album has eleven tracks devoted specifically to murdering the reputation of Megadeth. There are bits and crumbs here and there that might make you feel like you can finally nod your head. But that moment doesn't last too long as it leads on to depressing pop-metal choruses and anorexic drops. Mustaine’s vocals sound disconnected and sluggish, not that he was a great vocalist to begin with, but don’t expect attitude in his vocals that will even remotely remind you of the Rust In Peace era. The basic clockwork-like fusion of all the instruments that Megadeth once had, has fallen apart miserably.

The opening track ‘King Maker’ screams of the typical Megadeth thrash riffs through the verses. It includes Mustaine’s signature rebellious style of lyrics and god-like solos by Chris Broderick. Broderick’s probably the only guy in the band that has refused to recede musically; his work on the record is the only thing that’s kept essence in this quasi-thrash metal album. All I am saying is that Broderick’s wasting his time with Megadeth, it is pretty obvious that Mustaine has failed at playing the best card he has.

Four and a half minutes into the opening of the album comes the title track which really sets the dominoes off. The riff through the verses of ‘Super Collider’ reeks of stock hard rock, set behind constipated vocals by Mustaine. It seems like the lyricist we remember Mustaine to be has withered away. The choruses on ‘Super Collider’ and ‘Burn!’ are some of the worst the band has sounded yet. ‘Built For War’ also has some of the most ludicrous lyrics in the album, so much so that its embarrassing to listen to it.

‘The Blackest Crow’ opens with a banjo melody that reminded me of a post apocalyptic zombie land scenario. Anyone who’s ever played ‘Left 4 Dead’ might relate to it. But as soon as it melts to get heavier is when you realize how misguided the general musicality of the album is. And this recurs throughout the album leaving you confused and trying to make sense of the progressions in each song.

Now, I have been a fan of Megadeth’s since the time, when the whole band was a bunch of rebellious-souped up on some chemical-anarchist teenagers, up until Dave Mustaine’s seventeenth trip to rehab proved to be one too many to his thrash metal-god status. This album has definitely left my faith in Megadeth shake. I pray to all things holy, for Super Collider to not be the nail in Megadeth’s coffin.
