One of the best ways to find new music is also a great way for artist to market their songs without actually advertising - television! I for one have discovered really cool artists or new songs that I have never heard on the radio by watching my favorite TV show or hearing a clip of it in a commercial. I am going to talk about how music is found and used in other mediums and discuss the various uses of music on TV.
Music supervisors are responsible for integrating music into other forms of media. This may entail overseeing in-house production, hiring composers and other music talent or finding existing works and licensing for specific use. As more and more music supervisors use not only new music from popular artists but also old music and songs from independent artists, music on TV has become an essential method for labels to increase visibility for artists - this is a major advantage considering independent or even newly signed artists have small marketing budgets.
Music on Television Shows
All TV shows have openings that use music, this is true whether they are sitcoms, dramas, talk shows, etc. A lot TV series will use an original song or music from established artist but usually not extremely popular, so TV viewers are less likely to be familiar with the song before being used on the television show. When utilized in this way getting their music on TV can be a major springboard for budding artists.
Additionally, music on TV is used for transitional scenes and around pivotal plot points . When used correctly, music on TV locks in the feeling of the storyline and makes important scenes more dramatic and unforgettable. If a song you have never heard before has made an emotional impact on you or even moved you to tears during a television show then the music supervisor has done an excellent job, and the artist most likely just found a new fan. The beauty of this arrangement is most television viewers will not randomly search for songs from artists unknown to them but their television viewing habits give many artists countless opportunities to gain a larger following.
It is important to note that the steady increase in reality television shows has played an integral role in the surge of music on TV. Due to the ways reality shows are edited there are many transitional scenes which always use music. This is a great avenue for artist looking to increase their exposure as many reality shows are repeated frequently and the network websites often provide information about the music used in each episode.
Music in TV Commercials
Music is consistently used in advertisements for all sorts of products. Unlike the use in television programming which targets an already captive audience the music used in commercials helps to attract or maintain the attention of TV viewers during commercial breaks, after all advertising is useless if no one pays attention it. The right song can not only entice TV viewers to watch an entire commercial but also make for a very memorable advertising campaign. This is the one instance where the music on TV that is used will likely come from a major artist and be a widely played song, it is easier to determine if a song is catchy enough for TV ad if it is already in heavy rotation on the radio and placing well on the charts.
Music in Films
When you think about music on TV films may not be the first thing that come to mind but they should not be over looked. Some channels supplement a large bulk of their network programming with made for TV movies, these movies usually have original compositions provided by film composers. However many networks show major movies that were released in previous years or independent films and documentaries which use music from various artists.
This article barely skimmed all the uses of music on TV but hopefully gave you an idea of how versatile and essential music is to television. Whether it is a TV show, TV ad or movie, some musical piece is integral to creating a feel with the images being shown to television viewers.
