Play Piano Exercises to Increase your Skill
Practicing may seem like the death word in playing piano because sometimes it may seem boring with no end. That it is why we are here to debunk that myth and not only understand how fun it can be sometimes, but also increase your skill so you don’t need to fear practice. You have probably heard of the saying work smart not just hard. When people work out at the gym with a set routine they grow big muscles while they are sleeping at home. In this article you will find the same thing applies to practicing and playing piano exercises.
A lot of people ask why we should play piano exercises. For advanced pianists, if you find conventional piano exercises boring, find something fun like Chopin’s 24 Etudes categorized in Op.10 – Op.25. That should keep you busy for a while. You will quickly realize the piano exercises focus on a specific technical music challenge. Therefore in beginner’s piano, find easy pieces to play and run over that excerpt in varying rhythmic styles.
Sometimes when there is a lack of motivation it’s because there isn’t an accountability partner or a friendly competition. When there are other players in the game the pressure mounds to perform at a high level. Most piano teachers will host recitals for a group of ambitious students to play their favourite piano piece. Playing any type of difficulty does not matter as much as you are able to push yourself out of your comfort zone and test your ability to play in front of an audience.
To amaze an audience a flashy or deep piece of music sometimes needs to be included in the repertoire. However people have fear because of the level of skill required to perform. Therefore I have three main advices to give to make difficult songs easier to play. A fun secret I always use for myself is to practice a passage way beyond the required execution. What does that mean? First play it twice as slow to get the hang of it. Then play it twice as fast, and faster and faster. Then add flavour, colour and texture. Play it in a different rhythm. Finally play it normally. Now is the required execution now a LOT easier? Yes. Next is to listen to professionals and mimic their style. Finally if you are still having troubles, work on piano exercises relevant to the passage in the song you are working with.
After explaining all the techniques you should be on your way to having effective piano practicing sessions. The end goal of success isn’t out of reach anymore. It just takes time and experience. You will no longer need to fear practice. This set routine will grow your finger and synaptic functions in your brain while you sleep at home. Regardless of hundreds of thousands piano playing musicians out there, you can drastically improve the quality of your performance with this knowledge and play piano exercises to improve your skill.
