Alright I hope everyone had fun for record store day. Today marked the fifth annual record store day. I am so glad that communities all across the country decided to celebrate this. This does fantastic things for everyone involved. And it actually even helps alot of people that aren't directly involved. These type of events bring communities together. It creates a family friendly environment. It brings money into the neighborhoods. And it helps local or independent artist. Not to mention what it does for the music industry itself. Think about all the artist that have their albums re-released just for this event. They can have that album re-released on vinyl, or compact disc even make the new album available for download. Though this kinda defeats the purpose.
But doing this creates a massive flow of brand new fans. Kids these days and probably every generation have always been into the Retro scene. Especially when it comes to music and clothes. So now you have these kids stumbling through record stores looking for something they can play that none of their friends have ever heard before. Which does what? Well it brings an otherwise forgotten band or artist back into the limelight, and with any luck they will be re-releasing one of their albums next year.
What do we know about vinyl. Well it is bulky and yes it requires upkeep. But if you know a better feeling than opening that sleeve playing that record a million times and reading all the liner notes. Please tell me. I always loved records that had a ton of cover art. You just don't get that when you download a song. And that in itself is yet another downfalls to digital music. When you download a song you usually only down load one song. What about the rest of the album? Sure the rest of it might be worthless. But, what if its not?
I cant tell you how many times I bought a record that just wasn't that great. That doesn't mean the the whole thing was a waste. A lot of times when I bought records like this is usually the way I found some of my favorite songs. It may only be one song on some records but how else would I have found it. If not for getting the entire album. Plus sometimes I was listening to the next big hit before any one else had ever even heard it. So I guess the moral of the story is don't cheat yourself out of great music.
