Making music is very much so about the feeling that you have on the inside of you, as well as knowing how to express those thoughts, emotions, and feelings to the world in a musical, and artfully done manner. Since having the right software to make music with is essentially an extension of you, your mind, and your creativity; I am a firm believer that it is of the utmost importance as far as your career as a producer is concerned to make the right choice when looking for software to meet your beat making and audio production needs.
You think that T-Pain or Nitti or Mike Will got to where they are, as far as producer's status goes by just using any old thing? No they did not of course! They found the right tools, and the right software, that worked well for them and complimented their workflow.
I read an article interview on Apple's website where T-Pain talked about how he produced his hit single “I'm Sprung” on Garageband, and as his skills progressed, he moved on to Logic Studio. Now T-Pain is a platinum selling, Grammy Award winning artist and producer, and even he had to start somewhere.
And so as it will be with you. You have to first look into your resources, and what it is exactly that you can afford or acquire without money to pursue your musical endeavors.
If you are operating a Mac computer to make your beats with, then you already know that it comes with Garageband, which is an excellent starting point if you're on a budget. Garageband is essentially a “light” version of Logic Studio, especially the latest version of Garageband that comes with OSX Lion. You'll have everything that you need to make those dope beats out of the gate. Hence, my T-Pain reference.
Or, if you're on a PC, of course you may be aware of FL Studio, which you can download and use for free until infinity, but I believe that the free trial version will not allow you to save your projects. I for one would just never turn my computer off or close out the program, but you know, accidents do happen, so investing in your beat making career by purchasing the program might be a wise thing to do.
Many producers have done exceptionally well with FL Studio, take a look at Soulja Boy, Jahlil Beats, and Lex Luger. They are all topping the charts, and getting paid in the process.
Once again, and so as it will be with you. You too will be topping the charts and making them dollars as well, once you find the right fit for YOUR beat making needs. If you're looking for software to make music, go to all of the different beat making applications respective websites, and download their demos so that you can play around with them. See what you like about each program, or what you don't like. And then make your choice from there.
You'll only get better at making beats as you make more and more of them, and if you enjoy using the program that you choose, better beat making will come with ease. Next thing you know, you'll be acting and directing musicals, like the Freaknizzle character above from T-Pain's Freaknik the Musical. If you haven't seen that movie, you should check it out. Hilarious ain't even the word!
The sky's the limit y'all. You just have to make it happen man. Don't waste another day of putting off your destiny. Better beats ahead.
