The Voice is the newest television show that is promoting new and undiscovered vocal talent to the American public. It has just begun its second season and looks to be gaining some momentum. NBC premiered The Voice right after the Super Bowl, which was a brilliant idea being the Super Bowl just broke the record for highest viewed television program is history.
At the end of the day, one has to wonder if another singing competition is really necessary when there are already other well established programs like American Idol, America’s Got Talent, and The X Factor (new Simon Cowell production).
The Voice is altogether different for one primary reason, one that I think sets it apart; the judges base their approval of the audition SOLELY on the singers voice. That cannot be overstated. In a world where so much is garnered through appearance and image, it is refreshing to have a mainstream competition level the playing field by keeping the identity of the singer anonymous to the judges until they hear the voice and decide if that voice is good enough to move on in the competition.
I can remember last season’s audition rounds when there were a couple of times the judges hit their button to approve of the singers voice and then were taken aback on the image of the singer. A few times the judges even said “you don’t look like you sound”…..which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In the end, the best voices get chosen and that lends itself to truly finding great talent.
Being a singer myself, I really appreciate that The Voice is really living up to its name. I can remember many occasions where certain other televised singing programs really got me aggravated because it was OBVIOUS that some of the contestants couldn’t sing, but were still in the competition because of their looks. Call a spade a spade and be honest about what you are trying to achieve. If you’re looking for the prettiest person that can’t really sing well, then name your show accordingly!
One last thing I want to compliment The Voice on is that it is changing the culture (hopefully) of pop music and other music genre’s for the better. Think about it….just a couple of years ago, an artist like Adele would probably have had less of a chance to really be a stand out artist/performer like she is today, even though she is hands down one of the best female vocalist in music today (and quiet beautiful as well). I really believe that The Voice has encouraged such a success story like Adele’s to be possible in a music world filled with Kesha’s.
I hope you will join me in championing The Voice, a real vocal talent based singing competition. Who knows what other amazing artist, like Adele, will now have opportunity to shine because they really are amazing singers? I hope many more……
