I remember the first time I saw U2, they were on MTV, when MTV was actually a music video station. They where on a dock in Ireland I think, playing "Gloria", and from that moment on I was a U2 fan. About a year later the album 'War" came out with "Sunday, Bloody Sunday " and "New Years Day" and I knew they were going to be big. This band more has a unique sound, a unique flavor and presence about them.
I was hanging out with some friends of mine one night and we were drinking more than a few beers and U2 came on the radio. I told people this was going to be the next super group, others claimed it was going to be Def Leopard or Billy Squire but I could just tell this band had a certain magic to them.
Some 8 years passed before I could go see them in concert at Sullivan Stadium (Now the home of the New England Patriots). U2 had just released "Achtung Baby" and by then they were already the super group I had predicted some 8 years before. They released one of the greatest selling albums of all time "The Joshua Tree". They toured the world, selling out stadiums every where they went and were voted the best performance at "Live Aid".
The Zoo TV show was so great that I went to all 3 shows and saw then 2 more times in others tours. The passion of their music is as unique in concert as it is in the studio. If they had not played at an open stadium they would have ripped the roof off the place with the electric performance they put on. There where cars hanging on cranes floating around with spotlights on them lighting up the stage there was a belly dancer who came out and danced to "She Moves In Mysterious Ways" (she also later went on went on to marry the Edge).
But the most unique part of this super show was the catwalk that lead from the main stage to a smaller more personal with the crowd stage at mid field. I had seen several outdoor stadium shows but never seen that one before, it was as if U2 really cared about the crowd, they where trying to get as close to the people as possible. So close as a matter of fact that each time I have seen them, some 5 times now, they always pull someone from the crowd on stage with them. The most memorable one being at the TD Garden when Bono was taking requests from the fans in the front row. This was during their "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" tour. Bono turned to someone in the front row and said "If you want to hear that song, you come up here and play it!" They pulled this bewildered looking guy on stage with them, give him an acoustic guitar and played Rod Steward and Jeff Beck's "People Get Ready ". It's shows like these that make doing a U2 review that much easier.
The biggest and in my opinion, the best classic rock band ever to come out of Ireland found their pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. This band got the luck of the Irish with their wit, charm and passion for rock n roll. U2 is one of the greatest bands of all time and I hope I can see them at least 5 more times in concert because 5 is not enough times to see one of the greatest acts of rock music history!
Thanks for the article Rego! U2 is my favorite group too! I saw them in concert during the Joshua Tree Tour! They were amazing!
