Whatever Happened to Real Music Is it Dead?

In this article we are looking at the current trend of electronically produced music versus the music produced by traditional bands that play real instruments. We discuss the potential future of music and if we will ever see the day again when music produced by bands will ever dominate the charts.

Look at the top 50 charts these days and you will find that almost all the chart is hit after hit of electronically produced music. It looks like gone are the days of bands that actually played music. Bands that had a lot of talent with the traditional four / five piece band comprising of two guitars, bass, drums and vocals have had their day. Such great bands as Metallica, Guns 'n Roses, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who ... even more recent bands like The Foo Fighters and Nickelback. These are all bands that learned to play their instruments and come together to make "real" music.

Today we are presented with highly produced electronic "backing tracks" given to a singer to lay the vocal track over and distribute to fans to escalate up the charts without ever laying a hand on a "real" instrument. It seems we are living in the age of glorified karaoke singers that are passing themselves off as true rock-stars. Just see how many chords some of these musical superstars could show you how to play on a piano or guitar and my bet is it would be practically zero.

In the fairness of the current generation, we must ask has it always been this way? Was it always a prerequisite that music superstars have been able to play an instrument well? Well ... the answer is no if you consider stars like Elvis. Elvis Presley could string a few chords together on a guitar, but for the most part he had most of his songs written for him and performed by professional studio musicians and he only laid down the vocal track. I guess Elvis was the pre-cursor to our "vocal" stars of today.

As a professional DJ and avid vocalist and guitarist, I do find it disappointing that today's music has become so heavily "electronically" produced rather than using real musicians that have taken years to perfect the craft of their chosen instruments.

I don't mean to take away from the talents of our stars today, but I would just love to see a little more creativity and actual musical craft coming out of our stable of stars.
