I hate snakes. I detest snakes. I can not stand snakes. I decided to face my fears(kind of) so I'm writing this article about snakes. Snakes those creepy, slithering creatures who have no soul and a fork tongue. Well hey we all have to face our fears some time. So please bear with me my readers as I explain the not so wonderful life of a snake. You ready? Let's go!
What is a snake?
Snakes are reptiles that have no legs or ears, and slither around the ground or seas. Similar to all squamates, snakes are cold blooded(meaning that their internal temperature is regulated by external temperatures), so the snakes must find colder and warmer places to keep alive.
The size of snakes ranges quite a bit, the biggest being the python which is around(39 to 49 feet) and the smallest being( 4 inches). The skin of a snake is covered in scales(and is not slimy, contrary to popular belief) and is more dry equipped to grip the surface surrounding the snake. During the molting period a snake, sheds his older skin and reviews a new skin for the summer season. Their eyes are always open even when they are asleep, they can however close their retina for brief periods of time.
Their eyes are not as great as ours but they do have the ability to distinguish between dark and light, to even lower shades of green and blues. Though their eyes are not that great their ability to smell makes up for their lack of eye sight. Picking their prey by smelling the air(with their forked tongue). Snakes keep their tongues in constant motion to be constantly in contact with their surrounding(whether its in the water, the air or wherever).
The bottoms of their bodies are very sensitive to their surroundings, so they use this ability to sense the presence of other creatures and determine whether or not if they are bigger than them are not.
Snake Feeding habits
Cobras and vipers are known for using their poisonous fangs to kill their unfortunate prey. The fangs of some vipers are hallowed out to make the poison spread more efficiently. All snakes are carnivores(meaning they eat nothing but other animals), their diet include snails, mice, birds and sometime other snakes. Some snakes are not poisonous, but constrictors(which mean they squeeze their prey until they are not able to move). After being constricted they then swallow them whole and digest them for the next couple of days.
