Sitting at the bay window provides a fantastic view of the rough terrain here in New Mexico. I gaze out towards the west and see some majestic looking peak poking it's head up just high enough to see the summit. Hermit's Peak is known as the end of the Rockies.
I begin to dream of a journey that will take me there. I will go on horseback, of course, being a cowboy how else would you expect me to get there? In the pickup truck?
How far do you suppose that peak is from here? 20 miles? Maybe more! Not sure, but I want to go and see for myself.
Let's see now, what to take with me. Oh yes:
- food
- bedroll
- water
- change of clothes
My horse, Oscar, will be excited to go. We haven't been off the ranch in months!
So I gather what I need for the journey and saddle up Oscar and get under way. The first couple of hours are great. Just Oscar and me out for an adventure. One problem though, who put this fence in the way! Well, after following the fence line north through some very rough country, we find a barb-wire gate. Now off course by about 2 miles, we pass through the gate and continue towards Hermit's Peak.
Did I mention it gets blazing hot here in New Mexico? Oh boy! And did I pick a day with temperatures hitting near triple digits! Now back on course and we travel for another 8 or 9 miles towards our destination. A really big obstacle is now in our way. Who put this freeway here? And a frontage road to boot! Now just how did I get here?
The problem here is not how to cross, but how to get past the 3 fences that block our path. OK, great dream, but very poor planning!
I know ya'll want to hear about how Oscar and I spent the night wandering back to the ranch, with my dashed dream in tow! We made the best of it like the good cowboy that I am.
I want to speak of another dream now and compare it to my Hermit's Peak dream. I speak of my dream to become an Internet Marketer. You know the one where I make loads of cash in days!
Great dream, right? Let's think a little further down the road. I start my journey by launching a new website, and sit back and wait. Hey! It's been 5 days and still no cash! Sounds like a barb-wire fence is in the way!
I turn north and find out about how to drive traffic to my newly built website. I pass through that gate only to find my website is poorly written and needs an overhaul! It's about this spot in the journey I decide to tuck tail and run back to my reality. It's not a great reality but at least its safe!
A final word to those of you wanting to become an Internet marketeer. Be sure your dream is followed by some well thought out planning before you begin your journey. Find someone that has been there and done that, a travel guide if you will and pick his brains til the cows come home.
Happy Trails!
Very nice way to combine a story with real life. Keep up and good luck
Your analogies are very good about internet marketing. I liked your article and found it had me thinking about your ranch....and my own internet marketing!
As usual cynthia is right on with her advice. IM is a dream you can realize so stay the course. I like the way you tie your articles into real life. It kind of hits home with me. Pin'd
Awe thanks! It just hits me over the head like a 2x4 sometimes. Wham! I get a different perspective by laying on the ground looking up at things! LOL I have a big knot on the back of my head sometimes, but it's worth it! Thanks for sharing, John
Good article. Internet marketing is just like you and your horse out working on a fence. As in? Focus on getting the fence done! How? Exactly the same way you would if awake and on your horse. As in what do you need to do for this one section of fence right in front of you right now? When done, what part of the fence is most important next? (what's most dangerous on the other side of the broken parts? ah, those neighbors are all growing tomatoes but that one neighbor's got a bull? Maybe the tomato ones can wait...;).
I need to work on fence! Actually that reminds me of the sign on the fence that said I hope you can cross this pasture in less than 10 seconds because my bull can do it in 10 seconds flat! Thanks for the read. (the fence I came upon was a barrier in my journey to the mountain peak in the distance I was trying to reach) I didn't know of all the barriers ie. the fences, freeway, highways and canyons were going to be there! Many people start their internet marketing career in the same way I did with this ill fated journey. They dream and then act, but are missing an important step in between: planning and research. Maybe a tour guide or mentor can help with this.
LOL! And? Indeed! You're right. Having a person makes all the difference. For now? You're exactly on track - keep writing here at Street Articles and checking out other people's stuff. Make your own plan and research as you go. But don't forget you've got the most important pieces right inside your dream. So long as you're willing to "course correct" you'll do fine.
Always good to have a guide that's traveled the path you want to take! Nice article!
Yup, so true! I guess some might call that a mentor! Thanks for the compliment!
I enjoyed the article, the trip and all, and then you come back to internet marketing, are you doing the Affiliated course?
Nope just writing! And connecting the dots! LOL Just the thoughts of an ole cowboy and how it applies to today's world. What affiliated course? WA? I did the 10 day trial. Now am learning some things and writing. Haven't spent a dime yet. If I had a dime to spend I would spend it at WA, I think. Looks like a great place to do just that. Once I get some beef off to market, then budget will look better. Until then, I am writing and playing around with a few free websites. Learning about SEO and all that crazy internet marketing tools I need to learn.
I do believe the WA is a great course to take and I've over the last six months read a lot of obvious WA articles, I was going to say if this was your start on the course, well done as its the best turn around of a story to internet marketing... was expecting a website selling beef cuts from my favourite American Cowboy... prefer the articles you write to many others ...
Awe you are too kind! Thanks for the encouragement. I probably should be selling beef! LOL That can be sold over the internet? Wow what next, computers that talk to you? I really have just been out here learning the ropes for free before jumping into paying a monthly tuition at WA. For an ole dog like me, new tricks take time to learn. Heck, I am just beginning to break out of my shell with my writing! I think university training squashed my creativity! Oh there you go again, I have another article to write! I sure do appreciate your input and stories! Thanks a bunch
Keep up your writing at Street Articles and you'll be well on your way.
