I have a problem, I’m over 50 and looking for work. Corporations these days are looking to cut their overhead and one way to do this is to eliminate the higher paid workers. In many corporate jobs, people over 50 have worked their way to the top of the pay scale. Are they worth the extra pay? Many times the answer is yes but their time off is increasing due to physical challenges. A younger person doesn’t have these issues. Is it illegal to let someone go due to their age? Absolutely! Does it happen anyway? You betcha.
As an older worker you have rights but corporate america has found a way around that. I live in New York. This is an employ at will state. This means that you can be terminated at any time, for any reason. My last termination was because the customer didn’t like me. End of story. Was it because I was older? This was not supported in any of the paperwork. Could that have been a contributing factor? Most definitely.
This is happening more and more, companies find a way to find fault with the performance of older workers and this allows them to terminate within the law. It is a sad truth but a truth nonetheless. It is possible to take the company to court but the burden of proof is on the employee and not the company. The company also has a legal department, the employee has limited legal resources and frequently has limited funds to support a legal challenge.
What are your alternatives? If you are an older worker, take stock of what you have learned over your career. Can you find alternative jobs? People over 50 have a wealth of information from their experience. It takes a bit of “thinking outside the box” to identify a way to make an alternate income from this experience. Look at your employment history and the clients that your previous companies make their money from. Do you have a relationship with any of these clients? What might you provide to these people that they need.
In my travels, I have found that my level of experience provides me with a unique opportunity. I can teach younger workers and those below my level what it takes to succeed. The internet provides me with a way to reach those that want to learn what I have to offer.
The problem that I had was that while I have all of this information at my fingertips, I didn’t know how to reach these people. What I found that I needed was a new skill in Internet Marketing. I needed to learn how to reach my market. I knew there was a group of people that wanted what I had, I had what they wanted and the two concepts needed connection.
Internet Marketing is a skill in itself. As I had no idea how to go about this I started to search for a legitimate way to learn this. About 2 years ago I found a place that teaches people how to do Internet Marketing. In the time since I joined the owners of this site have provided some great training and are even showing off their site with a free trial membership. It is scary getting older and worrying about job security. It's really scary if you're single and you are the only source of income. I don't think that companies will be hiring en masse anytime soon, young or old. We should All know of a way to generate an income for ourselves. That will be your True Security.
