Create Your Own Home Business
By Ronald Ayers
If you’re ready to tell your boss he can “shove it!”, if you’re unemployed do to layoff, or if you’re looking to earn a little money on the side as you struggle to hold on to your current job, you can create your own home business today. There are thousands of home business, money-making activities you can choose from. Before you pick the one that suits your skills and temperament best (and keep in mind, many home business entrepreneurs, do get involved in more than just one venture at the same time), first you must prepare yourself for the success you want. Is any type of home business right for you?
This is the basic question, and only you have the answer. Do you really understand your individual strengths and limitations? Are you a self-starter? It is essential that you be able to manage your time and work productively without someone telling you what to do. You should also be able to organize your schedule and work, take charge of things, and finish the projects you start.
Unlike traditional Main Street businesses, which often fail due to lack of capital, the majority of home businesses that fail—and well over 50% do fail—do so because of poor management. You can start many types of home businesses with little money, but you must supply the desire, the, persistence, and the management. If you have great desire and are determined to see it through, but do need help in management areas, you may wish to hone these skills at one of the alternative adult nigh school classes which are offered in many cities throughout the country.
The following self-starter and personal management test will tell you (if you answer questions honestly, that is) where your capabilities and limitations are, and what areas you must seek improvement in. 1. Are you a self-starter? Do you like to make decisions and set objectives? ___Yes ___No 2. Are you comfortable “working alone” on a project from start to finish?___Yes ___No 3. Are you good at organizing your work?___Yes ___No 4. Are you basically self-confident?___Yes ___No 5. Are you an individual who prefers not having a boss?___Yes ___No 6. Are you willing to work harder for yourself than you would working for another?___Yes ___No 7. Are you will to do research, reading and inside or outside classroom study to perfect certain business skills?___Yes ___No 8. Do you believe you can be successful in your own home business?___Yes ___No 9. Are you ready to get stated right now?___Yes ___No 10. Do you desire more personal and financial independence?___Yes ___No
Without making “right or wrong” judgements, I feel a good candidate for a home business should answer yes to at least seven out of ten questions. And a positive yes answer to questions 1, 8, and 10 are very important. Management and organizational skills can be developed. Desire and determination should be present at the start.
