Dont Work Harder; Market Smarter

This article is to help people who are starting a small business understand the importance of marketing small business. The basis for the article is a simple piece of marketing advice that can save time and money to any business whether it is a network marketing business, or a jam maker or a consultancy.

When I was in specification sales I was forever hearing people say: "Don't work harder, work smarter!" Now in the information age this is even easier to do, and has never been more important. In his book Cold Calling Is A Waste Of Time: Sales Success In The Information Age, Frank J Rumbauskas points out that the power now lies with the prospect rather than the salesman. For example if I want to buy a new laptop, I don't wait till I get a call from Dell or someone else, nor do I go and allow myself to be bambuzzled with options from a hyper active salesman. I go online and research what I want and then go and get it, which gives me confidence and makes me come across as knowledgeable.

In order to get customers small business have to let them know they are there and what they do. Which is way sites like this come in really handy. By writing articles and bookmarking it, it is possible to get traffic to your site.

It can form part of the pre-sell element of your marketing pipeline that Ann Sieg talks about in her book the Renegade Marketer. What is the marketing pipeline? It is the process by which a member of the public finds you and becomes a customer, that buys from you and maybe even becomes an advocate for your company.

Pre-selling is the part of the process that identifies the segment of the market that would be best for your business to target, and possibly even gets them to buy a piece of infomation from you before buying the main product. I will talk about this kind of educational marketing in a later article. In the mean time by writing articles here and on a blog like a determined man you can let them know enough information about your business to enquire further.

You have to be seen as a consultant of equal standing to your customer. So the more infomative and professional your blog and articles are, the more prospects will want to communicate with you to obtain your advice as a trusted source. Once they have found you through your marketing, and like what they find and buy, they will become part of your marketing by providing word of mouth reccomendation. This is even more valuable and cannot be bought.

By appaering to be a professional and expert in your field you can grow your business by marketing, and being consistent. So by using the tools that I have talked about you can market you business inexpensively and become more respected by potential clients. This in turn will turn them into advocates for your business and make the marketing of your business almost viral; helping you to market smarter and leaving you with more time for your business.
