If I Could Work From Home I Would

How many of us have heard about the guy who works in his underwear from home? Or the folks that work from the side of their swimming pool?

Wow, wouldn't that be great (maybe not working in my underwear) but certainly working from home where you’re surrounded by your stuff, your animals, and your coffee pot. Once the rest of the family head to school or work the house is all yours. Wouldn't that be great?

If I could work from home I would:

1. Set my hours like I was at a job. The intent of working from home is to actually work and not get distracted by the dirty floor or laundry or even walking the dog. Although, for us procrastinators, sometimes those become our excuses to avoid the very thing that keeps us home.

But you must have set hours to make sure you are productive and continue to earn money. Or it won’t be very long before you’re back working for someone else and leaving the privacy of your four walls. So be diligent and set 9 to 5 or 8 to 4 or even 12 to 8. Keep to this schedule and you will continue to succeed.

2. Make sure I took breaks. One issue that could become problematic is that you are always at work and never giving yourself a much needed break. Schedule one…including coffee breaks, days off and vacation. You must still keep that work/life balance or you could become as burned out as you did when you held a “regular job”.

3. Set up a dedicated work space. It’s important to know that when you are in your “home office” you are there to work. Remove any distractions and do not have a TV or do any visiting there. It is where you are performing the duties of your “at home” job.

4. Sometimes I would cheat. Wouldn't it be fun to be out having coffee, doing some shopping, or standing on the front porch watching everyone else going to work or knowing you were relaxing while others were at work?

There is a certain sense of gratification and contentment when you are out and about when you used to be stuck at the office or working in a factory during set hours. How liberating to know you are now your own boss. But don’t forget to work your “home hours” when you’re doing this. You still have to put in your 8 hours.

I would love to hear your story if you are one of the fortunate who can work from home. What is your schedule and are you planning breaks?

It would be great to set up an office at home and then a work schedule. Maybe I could hang it on the front door.
