One of my recent interest is to become a journalist. Of course, this is a consequence of my reinvigorated interest in writing. As I was thinking about the idea to hone my writing skills so as to become a journalist, I received an e-mail the other day from street articles. In that e-mail Kyle and Carson encouraged us to take inspiration from news and even to write news stories. There are various strands of journalism I am interested in.
The first is political journalism. The epitome of political journalism in my opinion is geopolitics. International relations is also a very nice subject too. But the reason I like geopolitics is because it focuses on agendas and motives of various countries and the way they affect the political landscape of the planet.
To this end, I very much like and read the geopolitical analyses of Stratfor. Stratfor is a Washington based think tank that writes about various geopolitical scenarios of various countries. I like it a lot because it gives really nice and realistic analyses of weird and difficult to understand situations taking place in various places of the world. I specially appreciate the writing style of George Friedman, who is the founder and CEO of the organization.
I would also like to add that instead of becoming a mere journalist, I would like to do something on the lines of what Friedman et al. are doing at Stratfor. Mere journalism is also very good. I do not have any objections or doubts about that. But over the years I started to believe that mere journalism can provide you with loads of information. But it does not give you clear insights about what really is happening behind the scenes, or what could be the consequence of adopting one option or the other, from among a bunch of, let us say, political moves.
So what I would want to do is either to work for a geopolitical think tank or create one myself. This is what I think that I would like to do as a political journalist or a geopolitical analyst. I believe that while mere journalism provides you with loads of information about any subject at hand, a think tank of this kind provides you with valuable knowledge skimmed through the information jungle.
One can think of various other kinds of journalisms like technology journalism, media journalism or cultural journalism. I would like to write specifically about those types of journalisms in a separate article.
