Why I Started Working at Home Online

I started working online back in 2001 with a company that helps newspaper companies retain customers nationwide. I would call customers whose subscription was about to expire or who recently cancelled and offered them the latest specials. I had just one child then, and he took lots of naps. Eventually, I had to quit because he started to stay awake for longer periods of time. Then I had another baby. So, it just wasn't feasible to work the amount of time that I needed to with the professionalism that was required- you can't have babies crying in the background.

Since then, I worked for other jobs that just didn't pan out. Then, I decided I wanted to do affiliate marketing. I started working online jobs for a variety of companies. I didn't get rich quickly- I'm still not rich because I'm just revving up my engines.. I spent about a year doing research on the companies I worked for, then started blogging about it at Becky's Work at Home Mom Blog. My goal is to help others find legitimate income in their spare time as well as to increase the number of referrals.

Why do I work from home for online companies instead of getting a "real" job?

My schedule is pretty inconsistent. These jobs allow me the opportunity to work around my schedule instead of having my schedule work around my career. My kids' schedules, health, and other needs dictate my schedule. So, working around all of this, when they are playing outside or watching a movie, I can work. I can work as long and as hard as I want to, how I want to, and where.

How can I work for such a small amount of money compared to the time invested?

The way I saw it in the beginning is that 3 of my 6 kids are too young for school. They would have to be in day care. I would have to maintain a wardrobe as dictated by my profession along with transportation expenses (in my case maintaining a car). At the end of the day, in such a scenario, I saw myself picking up ready-to-eat dinners or take out. The math suggested that I would be paying to work or making something similar to what I started out making with these jobs.

In my current situation, all I have to do is maintain one or more computers, which I would have done anyway because my kids like to use computers to do school work and play games. If my car breaks down, we simply don't go to our activities or make other arrangements- which would be harder if I were taking my kids to school, day care and myself to work.

I specifically sought to work online for companies with referral (also known as affiliate) programs. Once I got more referrals, the dollars add up more quickly, making the time and effort spent in the beginning more worthwhile.

What else motivates me?

A couple of years ago, I started listening to a few famous radio talk show gurus. My church constantly preaches about spending less than what is earned. Thanks to the influence from the radio talk shows and church, I started to look at my budget under a microscope and realized my family and I needed to make some changes. My husband worked overtime whenever the opportunity arose. We wanted to be in control of our money instead of the money controlling us. In our 15 years of marriage, my husband and I were laid off at least 8 times. Two of those times were right after our first two kids were born. One of those times happened on our first anniversary and stable employment didn't come for exactly 365 days. The debts snowballed after our savings dried up.

We sold our house and moved to another house, it was bigger and on more land, (when we couldn't refinance) but had a smaller mortgage payment. In that process, we got rid of a lot of bills and made a promise to ourselves not to use credit cards. We still had some debts to pay off. Dodge Grand Caravan and went for a 1999 GMC Suburban. Thinking that we were doing well, we put our kids in sports for the first time in years. We chose one of the most expensive sports: gymnastics. That set our budget going south again.

I saw that I needed to be creative because I had, at the time, 5 kids that I was homeschooling. I also wanted to buy my kids a couple of Christmas and birthday presents without going into debt. The thousands of dollars I earned in less than half a year, most of it in my 3rd trimester with my 6th kid no less, has allowed us to pay many bills and buy presents without going into debt.

More benefits:

My older kids can see what it takes to work from home. I explain to them some of my strategies as I go. I sometimes find ways to get them involved. I get to blog about it as I develop my writing talents.

So in the end, you could say that I started working at home out of necessity and because I would love to be debt free.

Street Talk

Your reasons for working at home were sound. You and your husband must be very strong to face the financial challenges you have had. I thought lowering your mortgage was a terrific strategy. I have taken up the credit card discipline. They can be a trap. Best wishes Rebecca.

Enjoyed your article. thanks.

I enjoyed your article. I have some other reasons to add for working from home: Not worrying about my wardrobe, living in an area where most people commute (therefore, I save a lot of time and gas money), and flexibility in my schedule. I also get to write about things I am interested in and I get to help people one-on-one with my comments.

Thanks for the comment. I agree that not worrying about wardrobe or the gas involved in commuting is HUGE! Each are big drains on income and time. I am enjoying myself writing on Street Articles, too. Each morning, I get up with a couple of ideas to write about and I'm drawn to it like chocolate.

Nice article. I too have an erratic schedule that makes working at home desirable.

Thank you for the comment. Isn't it great that we have the choice of working at home, on our own schedule instead of having it dictated by someone else? I think that working at home has really helped me teach my kids a few things that may help them when they grow up because they see me work hard and stay dedicated.
