London Home Repairmen\'s Tips

The summer is almost here and we will start cleaning, ordering and redesigning our houses. What should we know about the materials, the paints and the methods of work in order to achieve good look for longer, on a lower price and all that to be safe for us and our family's health?

We need to start with the look of the place - what do we want to achieve? This is the first question that we need to answer. Look at the rooms, their usage on daily bases and try to decide what kind of look do you want. The right mixture between style and functionality is exactly what you must aim to. The wallpapers in the bathroom are a wonderful example what should not be done.

Once you've decided about the look that you want to achieve, the colours etc, try to find out a way to do this. Ask more than one specialist about the materials and the techniques that you will need to put in to use.

Tiling the bathroom

A procedure that sounds easy but it's not. The first thing to consider here is the surface where your tiles will be placed. It needs to be levelled and covered with special material called primer. This material will guarantee you that the cement glue for the tiles will be nicely fixed to the wall or the ground. This glue needs also to be water resistant just in case any water or moisture reaches the place. It should be applied on the wall with a spacial tool with small "teeth". This way just the right amount of material will be used.

The mixture for the tile gaps needs also to be special. There are two main types of mixture - water resistant and non water resistant. Of course, in your bathroom you need the first type. The difference between the two is huge, so make sure to put the right one, otherwise the chances to get mould underneath the tiles is significant and therefore pretty expensive too.

Latex paint - when and why?

  • If your bathroom is well covered with tiles where the water is running the rest of the walls can easily be covered with latex paint. The reason is that it allows the wall to breathe which means no mould.
  • The colour of the paint is the easiest thing these days. There are special scanners which will give you exactly the code of the paint that you want to achieve and then a special machine named - mixer will achieve the look.
  • The chemical based paint is another tool you will need. It is great when painting wood because it creates a special layer which protects the wood and does not allow it to rot.

Tip: when you want to make something white you will surely need several layer of paint, so keep in mind that changing the colour of your wall may take some more time. Remember that repainting the walls means staying in the room for quite some time, so wear a mask and open the windows and the doors wide. The paint can be toxic, so do not breathe in a much of it. You will start feeling dizzy and eventually sick, if you do not take the proper measures.

  • Cleaning after the repainting is the last job in the agenda. There are two ways of doing it - the easy one and the hard one. If you go for the first one, you'll need to have the covers on the ground and on the furniture already placed. A paper sellotape for the corners of the windows, the doors and the joints of the covers.

Remove the covers and start dusting. There will be a lot of dust and dry paint around, so you will have quite a lot of work. Vacuum clean the whole area and mop it well.

The hard way is when you have no covers. It means a lot of paint removing after the renovation. I personally think that it is not worth it, so you'd better go for the easy way, even though it is a bit more expensive.

However, there are professional companies that can do all that for you. If you think that spending the whole weekend in paint shops working at home and then cleaning, hire professionals for the job, take a break, go in the countryside and relax. When you come home the place will have a completely different look.

Some professionals , offer design advices, a repair of the house with redecoration and then cleaning. This sort of package makes it all so much easier. As an option they also offer commercial kitchen cleaning and oven cleaning, so you can hire them for your business, home or villa. The same guys will do it all.

So, try to make sure that you have all the needed tools and equipment along with the knowledge and make your home nicer and fresher. Now is the time to do it.
