2011: The Last Christmas?

There's an old saying about how, "Rome wasn't built in a day."

Quite so.

And I would like everyone out there to please remember that Rome is not going to be destroyed in a day either.

A whole lot of people these days seem solemnly convinced that the world will somehow suddenly end in another sixteen months or so on December 21st, 2012, that we are in fact living in the "last days." There are books, articles, movies, Mayan calendars and Biblical revelations all supposedly predicting the impending apocalypse.

That this Christmas will therefore be our last.

Interesting to consider the feasibility and logistics of such grandiose claims. Perhaps out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, at the international date line, a huge tsunami will suddenly leap up just as the second hand on the clock ticks past twelve... Perhaps the Earth will begin to shake and quake and crumble away into the nether just as the second hand ticks past twelve... Perhaps a huge asteroid will suddenly appear in the sky and knock our little blue and white 8 Ball into some Great Big Corner Pocket, just as the second hand passes twelve... Way out in the Pacific...

Perhaps. But I don't think so. This is not going to be our last Christmas, and this is not going to be our last Hanukkah. The world is not going to end on 12-21-12.

For one thing, there's a zero in the date nobody seems to be taking into account, 2012, as opposed to exactly a century from now in 2112 when there will be no zero (and therefore more numerically precise). For another thing, the world is not going to suddenly "end" on that date —- or on any other. The Earth is an extremely large entity, far more balanced and complex than most people realize. We need to think in terms of reality and not science fiction.

Finally, this is not the first time pessimists, doom-sayers, and general idiots everywhere have set up shop and attempted to sell their wares. Predicting the future has always been a big and very lucrative business, regardless of whether or not any of the predictions ever come true. People are fascinated, if not afraid, more so than ever today given all the media attention and hype.

And so this Christmas I encourage everyone out there to reassure their family and friends that, come what may, we'll be seeing each other again this time next year.
