In order to solve or appropriately reflect on any problem that requires a solution, one must be totally honest. The recent tragedy that occurred in Newtown and the many other such similar tragedies has presented this country with a day of reckoning. The handwriting has been on the wall for a long time, yet, we as a society refused to acknowledge we have a gun problem in this country.
Sure, we yell and scream about the right to arm ourselves as we talk about our second amendment rights. The second amendment is just like any other document; it will be scrutinized and twisted by an individual to gain advantage over the opposition. Take most any case to our judicial system and you will find lawyers on opposite sides arguing the same topic. Each will present their own interpretation. The losing side will appeal to the Supreme Court. Another interpretation on the same subject.
Let’s look at the right to bear arms amendment. It was written before the advent of assault weapons and many of the other killer weapons that are plaguing our society. MY INTERPRETATION is it was written at a time when our country was getting started and our central government did not have the weaponry to defend itself from our foreign enemies. Even if one believes they have a right to defend themselves from our government, said person would be no match with our present system. Just PR gimmicks.
Let me tell you of something that needs no interpretation. Undisputed fact: Twenty of our most precious resources were brutally murdered the other day. Everyone in this country can agree to that. The question becomes what plan of action will be implemented. Should we idly standby and wait for time to pass and prepare ourselves for the next incident? Or do we step up to the plate and take responsibility for our children safety?
We often hear the phrase that guns don’t kill but people do. Very slick PR gimmick by the gun advocates. Let me say this, inasmuch as our children are being killed by people, we must find a way to break up the combination of guns and people. The NRA is one of the most financially endowed organizations in this country. They contribute heavily in our political arena. They have paid lobbyist to do their bidding and usually get what they want.
Let’s get on with our honesty portion. Since the election of President Obama, gun ownership has doubled in this country. Just why is that? First we must understand that we live in a capitalist society. Therefore, the name of the game is to make money, the more that is made, the better. The gun advocates with their high priced lawyers and their PR people have their hands on the pulse of America and will use most any tactic to increase their bottom line; more money. They present a bogeyman to incite fear.
I will give you an example of how this works. Look no further than the poorest states in this union; southern and GOP. They use their PR people to pit the whites against the blacks and other minorities by telling them the blacks are out to take their jobs and everything else they own. When in fact, most of the jobs have been sent overseas by the wealthy folks. So while the whites and blacks rant against each other, the wealthy robs them both blind. This gun control thing is used in the same way. The black man (Obama) is coming to take your guns away so you better buy as many as you can before he stop your second amendment rights. In the meantime, the gun advocates laugh all the way to their favorite overseas bank.
I just hope for the sake of our children that we come to our senses and realize we must protect our children no matter the cost. No, I am not against the right to bear sensible arms. Nor am I against owing a fire arm to protect one family. However, assault weapons should be banned period.
Hi Ed, The problem is not about guns or gun control. When you have the chance, read my article "Understanding violence and the need to Update the Law Enforcement...." I wrote this article on April 3, 2012 explaining the problem and the solution. It is quite ironic that in the April 9, 2012 NYTimes Journal, the FBI said: "Although violent crime is down, the killing of police officers is rising, and they (the FBI) do not know why.
