Airline Baby Ban

There has been a lot of discussion lately about the airline baby ban. When I first heard about it I assumed that the airline baby ban involved not allowing babies to travel at all on a certain airline. Wow, that would be quite a ban. However, the airline baby ban actually involves the decision of Malaysia Airlines to ban babies from traveling in first class. Actually this was already occuring on their Boeing 747-400 jets. The new talk came about because the airline baby ban extends to the Airbus A380 aircraft.

How did this ban come about? Apparently according to Malaysian airline CEO, the airline ban is related to passengers in first class complaining about not being able to sleep because of babies crying. Well, as a result there has been quite a bit of talk and articles written on this. In fact, today July 29th in the yahoo search engine, "airline baby ban" was among the top four most searched terms.

I have read pretty opinionated statements regarding this issue. Those who are in favor and those are against the ban both have called the other side selfish giving their reasons as to why this is a good idea or a bad idea. But here is a poll to give us some cold facts, 289 people agreed with the decision and said that babies should in fact be banned from traveling in first class, 122 disagreed with the decision and here is the sad part, 204 said they should be banned from all classes.

So I would like to tell you what I think and open it up for comments so that you can express what you think. This topic intrigued me some because it indicates what people believe about personal rights, family, selfishness, etc.

First of all, I am father of three and as I write this my wife is sick and I have my four month old baby sitting next to me so I know what it is like to listen to a baby cry (last night he cried for a few hours). Parenting is both a tremendous privilege and a tremendous challenge. Sadly many parents are lost on how to train their kids to obey (now when it comes to babies there is not a whole lot you can do - babies cry).

I don't think it is a bad idea to not let babies travel in first class. If I am a parent I shouldn't expect others to have to listen to my baby cry if I have a choice. If I am a parent and have a baby crying I should be concerned about how it is effecting others. I think it is a good idea that the plane has the option for those than can afford to get a good night of sleep to allow babies everywhere except first class.

I do think it is insane to ban babies from all classes. That's crazy. What are these people thinking? Families have to travel. All of us at one point were a baby. If there was an airline baby ban that included all classes I would think that would be completely inappropriate.

What do you think about the airline baby ban?
