The tenth anniversary of September 11th is coming up quickly and security is heightened. In Washington D.C as well as New York City, experts and officials are working to make sure that the day comes and goes without any problems. But, experts are saying that a “specific, credible but as of yet unconfirmed” information has been received about potential threats targeting those two cities on that particular date.
Officials are not releasing a lot of details about the suspected threats but what has been said is conflicting at best. One official has said that three individuals, including one alleged US citizen have already arrived in the country while another official says that the trio in the suspected plot have not yet made it to the nation. One proposed plan involves a potential explosive filled vehicle, possibly a large truck but that has not been confirmed either.
The State Department official as well as other officials have said that all threats are investigated and that awareness and security is much tighter at this time. This particular threat is one that goes beyond what is already known from the information gathered at the Osama Bin Laden compound, raided when the terrorist leader was killed in May. In that raid, a treasure trove of intelligence was gathered and poured through by various agencies, looking for information that could bring an end to terrorist threats not only in the US but in other locations around the world as well. That intelligence did make mention of planned attacks for this historic anniversary, but none of those plans had gone beyond the initial discussion phase.
The officials have also said that they are monitoring “lots of chatter” on the various jihadi web sites where the talk has turned to violent attacks, namely on this date.
The events planned for the anniversary of one of the worst terrorist attacks on US ground include a reading of the names of the victims of that fateful day which will be attended by President Obama and his family as well as others. Security is going to be extreme for that event. Law enforcement agencies are already moving into place and will be looking for anything that looks like it is out of the ordinary.
In a CBS news poll, the majority of Americans did feel that that the threat of terrorism would always exist however, just over half of those surveyed did not think such a threat would happen in the next few months. Less than ten percent of the survey participants felt that it was “very likely” that an attack would occur in the coming months. Even fewer felt that they were in an area where an attack was likely to occur. Nearly seventy percent of those surveyed felt that they were free from such attacks on a personal level and just over half felt that the nation was prepared for another attack.
