Century Of Miracles

When my father was born early in 1900 above a saloon in Bountiful, Utah (now a historical site), there were no cars outside on the street, no electric lights, no telephone on the wall, none of the things that we take for granted today. Shortly thereafter, he was kidnapped by a Ute Indian lady who was barren. They got him back by bartering with the Utes.

When Dad died in 1988, we had learned to make cars, airplanes, telephones, electrical appliances, radios, televisions, computers and hula hoops.

When the vacuum tube was replaced by diode and transistor integrated circuits, the age of miniaturization began. It made our personal computers possible and it made mainframe computers reliable. The first giant computers, that had at least 100 tubes out at any time, were placed in museums or scrapped.

On October 4, 1957, Sputnik took to the skies, shocking the world as it traveled about 60 millions kilometers while circling the earth in three months finally burning up in the earth's atmosphere on my birthday on 4 January, 1958.

This was the true start of the Cold War and the Space Age. The rocketry was in part due to the German development of the V-series rockets that terrorized Great Britain.

Our astronauts planted our flag on the moon in 1969.

I worked on projects related to this period. We worked on the electronics for the first television satellite (Telstar) and many industrial and military applications for high temperature ceramics made from aluminum oxide and beryllium oxide.

My father was about 8-years-old when the family doctor gave him a ride in the first car in his home town. Shortly thereafter he walked behind a cow up over the mountains to Randolph, Utah known at times for being the coldest place in the country. There he was again isolated from cars, electricity and indoor plumbing.

Later my father's family tried to raise cattle on Ten Mile Pass near Soda Springs, Idaho.

I've been up there and a rancher told me that my grandfather didn't have a chance. The rancher has 500 head and he has to truck them down to American Falls in the fall to keep them alive in Idaho winters.

My grandfather and Dad suffered from scurvy the first winter in that frigid country, again with no electricity or indoor plumbing.

Dad and my Uncle Ben then homesteaded in Utah at Delta, their horses suffering horribly in the heat of the desert and they bolted when they could smell water in the distance, giving my father a wild uncontrolled ride.

They soon left farming and ranching forever and moved to Salt Lake City where there were cars and electric lights and indoor plumbing and pretty girls to court.

Part of the revolution in the last century was in medicine (and all sciences).

My parents were terrorized by polio epidemics and other diseases. My older sister contacted the disease when she was three, was in braces for years and after surgery Number 13 was able to wear a special shoe so she could walk. She died at age 19-years.

During these epidemics Dad thought that Milk of Magnesia was a preventive. We were told to stay out of movie houses. The schools were shut down. Nobody went to the movie theater. It was the safest place in town.

Salk and then Sabin made vaccine to prevent Polio. Smallpox was generally eliminated throughout the world.

The scientific world enjoyed a boom in electronic instrumentation, making stunning images using electron microscopes and other instrumentation.

NASA had their eyes on Mars.

Actually I'm happy right here in Idaho on God's Green Earth sitting here playing with my cordless mouse, my computer talking to my printer across the room again with no wires.

I text my wife's care giver and my kids and grand kids by cell phone which I only have to charge once a week.

When I get lost out in the boonies, my GPS brings me home.

I have binoculars and telescopes that Galileo would have given me the Tower of Pisa for. I can take high quality pics with my cell phone or one of my cameras. I can take videos with four of my cameras and I can make movies of birds and such on my computer and put them up on the Internet or send them to my friends and family.

I can talk to family members on my computer face-to-face and I'm in constant contact with friends and family by email or on a social site. We can read ebooks at our leisure.

We take all of these things for granted. What was that saying in the Bible?

... your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)

We should be grateful indeed. Now, what did I do with my cell phone?

I thank you, Texas Girl! I'm taking my older granddaughters up to Seattle to see their triplet cousins baptized. The triplets are eight years. Should be fun.
