Confirmed Taliban Attack Injures 77 American Servicemen

A spokeswoman for the International Security Assistance Forces has confirmed that the suicide truck bombing in the central-east province of Wardak in Afghanistan was the work of the Taliban and while it was a high profile attack, was largely less effective than was intended. The timing of the bombing made it stand out even more, coming on the eve of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in the US.

The truck, described as loaded with firewood to hide the explosives, made it to the first entry point of the Allied base before the driver detonated it. Two Afghan laborers working at the base were killed and twenty five other Afghan civilians were wounded. All 77 of the NATO troops that were injured in that attack were confirmed to have been American troops. None of the injuries are considered to be life threatening and all personnel are expected to be back to their regular duties, quickly.

There have been a number of high profile attacks, the majority of which directly linked to the Taliban. Security in the United States was heightened in preparation for the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, with several credible but unverified threats unveiled late on Friday evening. Security in and around New York City, especially was tightened even further so that the numerous events to honor the victims of that day would not be threatened.

The war in Afghanistan which began in October of 2001, just a month after the devastating attacks has been described by some as a waste of time while others have praised the efforts saying that the Taliban’s ouster from that country was a much needed step. The Taliban has regrouped but in much smaller numbers and with far less cohesiveness than before. The attack has summed up how little bite the terrorist group has left.

August of this year has been the most deadly for the US troops with 71 Americans killed. July of 2010 had previously held the dubious title of single most deadly month when 65 troops were killed in action. Thirty one Special Ops troops were killed when their helicopter was shot down at the completion of a mission. Those troopers were part of the same elite Navy Seal unit that had taken part in the killing of Osama Bin Laden in May. The violence has surged in recent months, largely in response to the action of the troops as they get ready to pull out of Afghanistan, handing security over to the troops there. Some 10,000 American troops are expected to be pulled from the country by the end of the year with total American withdrawal expected to have been completed by the end of 2014.

The officials in Afghanistan and the International Security Assistance Force spokespeople have had conflicting numbers for the attack, a common issue. The Afghan numbers had only ten to twelve American service people wounded in the bombing and a higher number of Afghan civilians that were killed.
