Einstein's Theory Of Relativity

Ever since I was in school, primary, secondary and University, I heard about Albert Einstein as one of the great scientists of the 20th century. He made a name with his famous research with energy and matter. He theorized that nothing could travel faster than the speed of light. He came up with the formula: E = mc2. He believed that no other matter on earth can travel faster than 186,282 miles per second which is the speed of light.

Faster Than The Speed of Light

But a European experiment carried out by 174 physicists from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN ) have found something faster than the speed of light. Runaway subatomic particles called neutrinos have been seen to be breaking the cosmic speed limit. If the findings of this experiment hold up, then the whole scientific community have some explanations to give. Einstein's Theory of relativity and much of 20th century physics would come under challenge.

The Experiment

A group of physicists fired a beam of neutrinos, a kind of subatomic particles, from their headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, at a detector located 454 miles away in Gran Sasso, Italy. They tracked and measured how long these ghostlike particles took to complete the trip. They repeated the experiments

for three years and analyzed the results intensely. They now report that the neutrinos are arriving 60 nanoseconds faster.

Opera

This tiny difference brought out by this experiment called OPERA ( Oscillation Project with Emulsion tracking Apparatus ) has great implications. It seems to shows how ever small, that the neutrinos were traveling faster than light. This will violate the long held ironclad cosmic law of relativity. If neutrinos can really do this, the backbone of modern science could be crushed.

Cause And Effect

If the backbone of Einstein's Theory of Relativity breaks down, does that mean that an effect could precede its cause? Or time could flow in reverse? Or messages could reach their destination before they are sent? Everything we used to think about the universe could turn upside down. The atomic theory and Isaac Newton's physics could all be in jeopardy.

Overview

We know that light travels very fast because when it rains, we can see the lightening many seconds before we hear the roar of the thunder. Einstein's theory of relativity has been the pillar of 20th century physics. I can not even begin to think of the implications. You can send a message that travels faster than the speed of light, but can you send a message that arrives at its destination before it is sent? Then time travel may become real.
