Gadhafi Continues to Refuse to Step Down, Nato Increases Its Attacks

Libyan President, Moammar Gadhafi gave a ten minute speech in which he vehemently declared that he would not be stopped and that he would not step down from power, no matter what. The speech, aired on Libyan state run television was backed by the sound of bombs and low flying planes. It was not confirmed whether the speech was delivered live via cell phone or was an audiotape. Pro-Gadhafi loyalists fired guns and shouted in celebration after the speech was concluded. In that speech, Gadhafi also told his followers that they were “stronger than all of their bombs”, calling NATO and their troops “bastards.”

NATO troops have increased their bombing missions of the Libyan capital city of Tripoli. At least 40 flights were flown over the compound, dropping bombs during the daylight hours. These day time raids had been rare in the beginning but are becoming increasingly more frequent and more intense in the ongoing mission trying to remove the dictator from office.

Meanwhile, Libya TV also showed a meeting which took place between Gadhafi and several tribal leaders. The meeting took place reportedly in an undisclosed location, in a small room without windows. Pro-Gadhafi troops and others have kept the leader’s whereabouts secret in an effort to protect him.

In February, spurred by uprisings in other Arab nations, rebels in Libya started staging protests and trying to regain control of the country. Currently, there strongest hold in Libya is in the east with some pockets of rebels moving into western Libya. NATO started backing the Libya rebels in response to the reactions of Gadhafi to their existence and the protests.

Nearly seven thousand people fled Libya on Monday, crossing into Tunisia in response to the increased NATO raids. Gadhafi has been in hiding since April, following the NATO targeting of one of his homes. His son and three of his grandsons were killed in that attack.

American President Barack Obama called for Gadhafi to step down for the good of his own nation and its people, echoing the sentiments of other nations. Russia has once again offered to renew the diplomatic efforts meant to negotiate a peaceful step down of the leader and transition to a new government. Gadhafi loyalists had initially reached out to Russia to serve as mediator, giving some hopes that there would be a peaceful and fast end to the war. However, Russia has agreed that Gadhafi must step down before any peaceable treaty can even be reached.

A number of top government officials have left their posts, defecting to the rebellion. It has been reported that Al-Amin Manfour, the Labor Minister is only one of the top ranking officials to have made that leap. In addition to the top government officials, there have been thousands of people who have fled from the country since February. Several thousand of those people have perished in the attempt to flee their homeland, including those who drown when their ship sank beneath them.
