Gadhafi Sends A Message: Surrender May Not Be An Option

Moammar Gadhafi released an audio message on the 42nd anniversary of the military coup that gave him power over Libya which was described as angry and defiant, urging the people still loyal to him to fight the rebels wherever they could be found. The message also referred to the rebels as gangsters, animals and cowards. Some have cited this message as definitive proof that Gadhafi is still alive, however there are some that still suggest that the leader is deceased and buried somewhere in the country.

Meanwhile, two of Gadhafi’s sons have offered conflicting messages of their own and neither directly confirmed that their father is still alive or where he might be hiding if he is still alive. Saif Gadhafi, speaking on Syrian television, has said that the rebels still face uphill battles in a number of locations, including Sirte, Gadhafi’s hometown where they face as many as “20,000 troops” ready to fight to the death to defend their leader and their country.

Saadi Gadhafi, meanwhile has offered an audio message that might have suggested that the military is ready to consider a provisional surrender to stop the bloodshed in the nation. That message was directly contradicted by a secondary message that was emailed to CNN which said that surrender was not an option at all.

Moammar Gadhafi was least heard in an audio message on August 25th, the location of that recording was also undisclosed. Continued searches and intelligence reports are suggesting that he might have fled the country, making his way into Algeria with other members of his family, allowed into that nation on “humanitarian considerations”. The rebel leaders have said that some of those allowed into the country will be sought for crimes and that some were subject to a travel ban. Gadhafi, his Interior Minister and some of his sons are all being sought on warrants issued by the International Crime Council for crimes against humanity, including actions that were taken before the uprising began.

Gadhafi’s foreign minister, Abdel Ati al Obeidi has surrendered to the National Transitional Council after issuing a statement that accepted that Moammar Gadhafi is still alive but was not in the position to be an effective leader of the Libyan people any longer.

Continued reports of mass graves and the slaughter of unarmed civilians continues to surface with some experts calling the reports nothing more than “inflammatory propaganda”. Others, speaking on the condition of anonymity, have confirmed at least a portion of these charges to the media.

The National Transitional Council were welcomed by various global leaders in a meeting that was held in Paris, formally recognized as the new and standing government of Libya. There are still a number of villages within the country that are held by loyalist troops, including Sirte. Rebel troops were making their way there after securing the Libyan capital, Tripoli where they have been for twelve days.
