Herman Cain has announced the suspension of his floundering campaign for the Republican presidential nomination amid growing concerns that his was a lost cause. Faced with increasing scandals from multiple sources, Cain also had other major hurdles to make his a viable run for the nomination in a tight field of hopefuls. His campaign staff had already been bracing for this announcement earlier in the week when they discussed the looming possibility of layoffs due to a lack of financing to maintain the current staffing numbers.
Cain exploded onto the scene that was already glutted with long shots and others. Sarah Palin had not yet announced that she would not be seeking the nomination of her party and Michelle Bachmann, formerly the party's golden child was starting to falter in the polls. Cain, a businessman and former head of the National Restaurant Association seemed to be the one who was echoing what the people wanted- less government and an anti-establishment mentality.
But, Cain stumbled early on, revealing a tax plan that many found impractical as well as unpalatable. Experts warned that the 9-9-9 tax plan was unworkable at best. And then came the foreign policy problem: Cain admitted that he did not have a working understanding of foreign policy nor did he think that he really needed to have it. He said that as president, he would have advisers that could help him out.
Putting aside a lack of political knowledge or a working foreign policy, Cain was still a savvy businessman and still a viable candidate until the first of a number of sexual scandals hit. When the first of the woman to accuse him of sexual harassment, Sharon Bialek came forward, Cain blamed it on the Democrats, liberal media and then finally, the camp of Texas Governor Rick Perry. Three other women also came forward, all claiming that they were harassed by Cain while he was still with the Restaurant Association. The final straw came when another woman, this time someone who was not employed by Cain, came forward claiming a lengthy, off and on sexual affair. That woman, Ginger White, told the press that she and Cain had been lovers for more than thirteen years and that he often gave her money for her bills and other expenses as well as taking her on expensive trips. Both Cain and White said that Gloria Cain did not know about the alleged friendship.
Cain cited the ongoing stress and strain of the media for his reasoning in suspending his campaign but stopped short of throwing in the towel.
