Human Rights Watch Voices Major Concerns About Situation In Libya

Human Rights Watch, the activism group has been monitoring the situation in Libya and is concerned that so called vengeance killings have been taking place on both sides of the on going conflict as the city of Tripoli falls to the rebels. In the Bab al Azizah compound, reportedly one of the hiding places used by Gadhafi and his family, there are a number of bodies, left to rot and bloat in the sweltering sun. A rudimentary field hospital had been set up just a few yards away from that compound with twenty four additional bodies left there after the fighters abandoned the area. But, the human rights groups are concerned because of the condition of some of those bodies. Three or more of the corpses were found to have their hands tied, indicating that they did not die in battle.

Gadhafi’s forces reportedly opened fire on a huddled mass of civilians, throwing grenades into the group of unarmed people who had sought refuge in a hangar which had recently been used as a military lockup. On Sunday, there were as many as fifty charred corpses found in that hangar.

At least 150 prisoners were killed earlier in the week when rebel forces were just starting to gain inroads into Tripoli. According to a former prisoner who had managed to escape, the guards promised that they were all being released very soon but instead of letting them go, the guards used grenades and other weapons to kill as many people as possible. When the site was inspected, the bodies lay stacked on top of one another, most burned beyond recognition. Additional bodies were found in shallow graves around the building. There has not been a final body count released for that one area. Rumors of other mass graves in and around the city continue to surface.

Some are saying that life in the Libyan capital is getting back to normal, however, there are some major problems including power outages and dwindling supplies of water. Food is also considered to be in short supply as well. Hospitals in the city and neighboring areas are filled to capacity and short staffed as well.

Gadhafi himself remains unaccounted for, with spokespeople saying that he is nearby and that he has never moved far from Tripoli. Speaking through Moussa Ibrahim, Gadhafi is also rumored to have offered to start talking about the transfer of power, however the rebel leaders are refusing to talk until he surrenders himself.

Rebel forces were moving closer to the city of Sirte, just east of Tripoli. That city is the hometown of Gadhafi and may be where he is currently hiding. It is also the location of the remaining regime’s stronghold- with many concerned that this might be the last, desperate act of a the loyal forces who will probably fight to the death. Many are also convinced that Gadhafi will not actually transfer power while he is still alive.
