The old theory of watching calories in and calories out is not cutting the mustard any longer. It sounds good on paper and easy enough to work with, but in working practice, it simply does not work. Scientists, working with a group of mice, may have stumbled on how to actually make weight loss work, once and for all. In that study, one group of mice were found to be able to make their fat cells actually change from white fat cells to brown ones.

In humans as well as mice, brown fat cells are good, responsible for burning energy while white fat cells store energy. In the study, the mice’s white fat cells started acting more like the brown ones within a month of changes in their habitat while after three months, the white cells actually turned to brown ones.

Matthew During, a Professor of Neuroscience at the Ohio State University Medical Center tested a theory that three modifications in lifestyle might be more effective toward weight loss efforts than simply monitoring calories in and out. Those modifications included: becoming more socially engaged, presenting the body with new challenges and staying physically active.

In that study, a group of mice were put into a new, enhanced habitat with twenty new cage mates, mazes, wheels and a number of interesting and interactive toys to play with. The mice in the fully enriched cages were also given access to unlimited food and water. The other group, used as the control also had unlimited food and water but were kept in smaller groups of five mice or fewer and had no toys. Those mice were also in smaller, more standardized cages.

Not only did the mice with the better cages have changes in their fat cells but they also had a loss of more than half of their abdominal fat and despite unlimited access to food, gained nearly thirty percent less weight overall than the control group of mice did. In a secondary study which changed exercise but not socialization and stimulation, the mice only lost a portion of weight over the control group and had zero change in their fat cells.

During believes that the mice in the enriched environment had a particular protein in their brain stimulated which might account for some of the dramatic results. That protein, BDNF sets off some changes in part of the nervous system which is responsible for the fight or flight response.

Applying these findings to humans will be the next step in the process and may put experts a step closer to figuring out the easiest way to conquer obesity once and for all. In some demographics, obesity numbers have tapered off but there have been no declines across the board in years. The Center for Disease Control has warned that obesity could be nearly 100% if the numbers do not change very dramatically and very quickly.
