Well, I am sure I was not the only one that saw this coming, but even I have to admit it happened a little faster than I thought it would have. When the Penn State scandal broke, I told my friends Joe Paterno would be dead within 6 months. How often do we see this? When passionate people stop doing what they are passionate about, they often seem to lose their will to live, and succumb to nature’s unyielding ways. I know he had some other health challenges, but I believe the unfolding of recent events had the biggest impact on his demise.

What many probably considered a life worth celebrating, seemed to end in a heart breaking fashion. He knew he should have treated this situation differently than he had. He made a mistake. We all make mistakes, but this was a really big mistake that seems to have had a terrible impact on many people, and that is probably an understatement.

How many of us feel like this has tainted his legacy? After all, he himself did not commit these terrible acts, but since he was informed of the situation and did not pursue it with more assertiveness, that makes him an accomplice in the minds of many.

Others were at least as responsible for this not being dealt with appropriately, but none as well known, and therefore, most of us will assign the biggest part of the blame with someone we can recognize, and that is Joe Paterno.

Joe Paterno spent 46 years as a head coach at a major college, Penn State, and impacted a great many lives. He continued to do what he loved, long after most of us would have retired. His passion for doing what he did was unquestionable. Paterno's many accomplishments gave him the ability to reach a multitude of people, and he did just that.

For those that knew of Joe Paterno, whether it be as a casual observer, or someone that knew him on a personal basis, surely everyone has developed their own opinion of him. Probably two opinions now. Joe Paterno before the scandal and now Joe Paterno after the scandal.

So, the questions I have for all of you are these:

Do you believe all of the good Joe Paterno did with his life outweighs this blight on his legacy?

Or do you feel like what he let happen, undermines all of the positives he contributed?

Maybe something less definitive?

Please share your thoughts. I think it is interesting to understand the different opinions of others.
