Philip Garrido and his wife, Nancy are both sitting in prison, serving lengthy terms for their part in the kidnapping, imprisonment and torture of Jaycee Dugard. Now thirty one, Dugard shared her terrifying tale with Diane Sawyer in a gut wrenchingly plain spoken, no holds barred interview. Her book, Stolen Life, is due in book stores on Tuesday. That book is a detailed account of her eighteen years at the hands of her captors, including the harrowing account of giving birth to the first of two children at the age of fourteen.
Jaycee Dugard was only eleven when Philip Garrido stunned her and threw her in the back of his car, tossing a blanket over top of the little girl to hide her. Garrido and his wife then drove the frightened young girl in a hidden compound comprised of sheds and tarps until she was found in 2009. Garrido kept her handcuffed at first, but eventually, the little girl had been victimized enough to be trusted with more freedom.
During those horrific days of captivity, Jaycee was subjected to hours of rape- often fueled by drugs. After one of his “runs” as Garrido called his drug inspired rapes, he would cry and then ask to be forgiven.
Jaycee was fourteen when the Garridos told her that she was probably pregnant. She gave birth alone and frightened, unsure of what was happening to her young body. Three years later, she would give birth to a second daughter.
No one knows exactly why but in 2009, Philip Garrido went to a meeting with his parole officer and confessed everything, leading authorities to Jaycee Dugard and her two daughters. Both of the Garridos pled guilty to charges of kidnapping and sexual assault. Philip Garrido was sentenced to over four hundred years in prison while his wife was given thirty six years to life for her role in what happened.
But, Jaycee Dugard was not the only victim to have her life stolen away by Philip Carrido. His former wife, Christine Murphy has come forward with details about his insane jealousy and physical attacks, including his attempt to gouge out her eye with a safety pin after seeing her talking to a man. Katherine Callaway Hall has also come forward- detailing a 1976 rape. Carrido approached her in a Lake Tahoe parking lot and asked her for a ride. After tying and gagging her, Carrido took Hall to Reno where she was repeatedly raped in a storage facility.
When police came to the compound in 2009, there were suspicions that the Garridos might be implicated in the disappearances of at least two other girls. During a police search of his compound, there were bone fragments found; there have been no further updates on who the bones belonged to.
Dugard credits the hope of seeing her mother as well as her two daughters with keeping her strong during her ordeal.
