Legendary Journalist Dies: Mike Wallace, 60 Minutes Correspondent Dies at 93

It opened with a stopwatch, ticking down the time and from the 1977-78 season, some eleven years after it began to the 2001 season, it stayed in the top ten among American viewers. The show was 60 Minutes, a news program unlike any that had been on the air before and one that could be imitated but never quite duplicated. Mike Wallace was among the first to be brought onto the show when it began in 1968 and would quickly become its face, one of the most recognizable members of the show's on air personalities.

On Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012, it was announced that Mike Wallace, age 93 had died in the long term care center he had been living in after a lengthy illness.

Wallace is credited for originating the news magazine style that is still used for broadcast news programs to this day. Already an established journalist when the show debuted, Wallace brought hard nose interviews to 60 Minutes that would make him a feared name in the business. Early in the show's run, the use of ambush interviews were popular but Wallace dismissed them saying they made for good television but poor interviews. CBS would eventually scrap using them completely. Wallace would remain with the show until his retirement in 2006, only coming back to do special interviews. Following heart surgery in 2008, he stopped appearing on air altogether.

Mike Wallace was feared as an interviewer because he was unafraid to ask the hard questions, to keep pushing and did hours of homework on each subject before he met them- ready to ask things they might have been unprepared to talk about. It was that hard hitting, pull no punches style that netted him over thirty awards in his lifetime including twenty one Emmy awards, five DuPont-Colombia journalism awards and five Peabody awards.

Members of the press stopped their broadcasts to report the news, some with tearful eyes on Sunday morning while others tweeted their feelings throughout the day.

In his personal life, Wallace, who had been born in 1918, was married four times. He had two children, Chris who is currently an anchor at the Fox News Network and Peter who died at the age of 19 after an accident in 1962. In addition to his wife Mary Yates, whom he married in 1986 and his son, Wallace is survived by a stepdaughter, Pauline Dora and a stepson, Earnes Yates.

Mike Wallace was my favourite! Loved his style of interviewing. When he finished working on 60 Minutes, I barely have watched the show since. I'm not overly fussy on the reporters except for Morley Safer. and maybe Steve Kroft R.I.P. Mike. And I also miss Andy Rooney as well
