The FBI will join in the search for two year old Sky Metalwala, the toddler who disappeared from his mother's parked car several days ago. That mother, Julia Biryukova, told police that she ran out of gas in Bellevue, just east of Seattle with her two children in the car. Unable to walk the mile back to the gas station, Biryukova chose to take her four year old daughter with her, leaving two year old Sky asleep in his car seat. When she returned an hour later, the boy was gone. According to police reports, only his mother and sister have seen him in the last two weeks.
So far, the police have no clues or leads in the case but have said that they do not suspect either parent in the child's disappearance. Julia Biryukova and Solomon Metalwala separated last year and have a less than civil relatonship with one another, according to court documents. Metalwala has contended that Biryukova is unable to care for the children on her own and that she has had mental health issues in the past. Biryukova, for her part, has said that she fears for her safety as well as the safety of her children because of Metalwala. She also told court officials that he had threatened to take the kids out of the country so that she could never see them again if there was a dispute about child custody.
Metalwala did agree to take a polygraph test on Monday but was asked to take a second after results from the initial test were deemed inconclusive. The police searched the area around the stranded car but did not find clues or leads. Police experts have concluded that the little boy did not get out of the car and wander off on his own.
When police investigators got to the car, they found it unlocked but were puzzled at its condition. Biryukova had said that the car was out of gas when she left the boy, but initial reports are indicating that a small amount of gas was in the car and that it would run.
Both Biryukova and Metalwala were charged with reckless endangerment in 2009 after they left Sky, then three months old, alone in a parked car. They were ordered to participate in parenting classes which court documents indicate they have completed.
Plans are being laid out for a more comprehensive search of the area where the car was parked when Sky disappeared.
