The prosecutors in the Casey Anthony trial are started to present their more technical evidence, the very same evidence that defense attorney, Jose Baez has been frantically trying to block since the earliest days of the case. That expert testimony included Saturday’s testimony by a FBI expert who told jurors that she found a single, 9 inch long hair that was genetically consistent with Caylee Anthony but not her mother, Casey. That single hair also is important to the case because it was revealed that it had what is called “root banding” which is only seen in hairs removed from a decomposing body. Baez had sought to block any mention of root banding during the trial.
Baez had also fought the introduction of testimony from another expert who tested air samples from the trunk of Casey Anthony’s car when it was retrieved. Those samples, it was revealed contained a high level of chloroform as well as an overwhelming odor of decomposition. Baez had originally dismissed these tests as “junk science” and tried to discredit the expert who gave the testimony, however the judge overruled these objections. Arpad Vass, is a Senior Research Scientist at the Tennessee Oak Ridge National Laboratory and has over twenty years of experience in the field.
Additional tests done on the Anthony car revealed acetic acid in the wheel well area. Acetic acid is consistent with a decomposing body. Laser testing had also revealed an increased level of a number of other inorganic materials, including calcium which is also consistent with decomposition.
In addition to the technical information which the jury have heard in the past few days, they were also allowed to listen to several interviews between Casey Anthony and the investigating officers who first handled the case when little Caylee was officially reported as missing. Those interviews were a tangle of very detailed stories, all of which were quickly proved to be lies. They were also played a number of taped, jailhouse conversations with Casey and her parents, Cindy and George, including one in which Casey sarcastically says that the media will try to say that Caylee drowned in the family’s pool and then laughs. On the opening day of this trial, defense attorney Jose Baez shocked everyone by claiming that Caylee did drown in the swimming pool in June, but the death was covered up by Casey and George Anthony at George’s direction. He further contended that Casey went along with the cover up because her father had been sexually abusing her all of her life. George Anthony denied all allegations presented by the defense.
Damning testimony has already been presented in the case with several friends, former boyfriends and others testifying that in the weeks after Caylee was last seen alive, the young woman on trial was not “looking frantically” for her little girl as she has claimed but rather partying in various nightclubs and living the life of a happy, carefree young woman.
