Newt Gingrich Wanted An Open Marriage, Speaks About American Culture Days Later

Newt Gingrich's second wife spoke candidly about the demise of the couple's marriage in an interview with ABC News, stating that she was offered the choice of either a divorce or allowing her husband to continue with his affair. Marianne Gingrich, who was married to the former Speaker of the House for eighteen years chose to allow their marriage, self described as floundering at the time, to end. Ironically, just days after that alleged conversation, Gingrich delivered a speech called "The Demise of the American Culture".

Gingrich was already married when he started an affair with Marianne, his younger, Congressional aide at the time. He divorced first wife, Jackie and married Marianne just six months later. Gingrich has already fought off reports that he served his first wife with divorce papers while she was in the hospital saying that it was she who had actually filed the documents. Gingrich's two daughters with Jackie also wrote letters that were posted to his campaign website in support of their father, saying in part that it was his version that was true and not their mother's. Court documents, long thought destroyed or missing were recovered and confirmed that it was Mr. Gingrich who filed for divorce and Jackie who had objected to the action.

The Gingrich daughters again wrote letters, this time to ABC News to complain about the interview with Marianne Gingrich saying that it was not proper and that it had nothing to do with any of the issues at hand. Gingrich also used the interview to open the debates in South Carolina, decrying the media outlets that were focusing on hismarital past as relevant. He also said that if it were a Democrat there would be no coverage at all. He then blasted ABC News and CNN directly before demanding that the debate get back to the actual topics and issues that mattered.

Marianne Gingrich had previously given a similar interview to Esquire magazine but this marks the first time she has made these statements in front of a camera. Jackie Battley, his first wife has refused to speak about their marriage on camera at all.

Marianne also spoke about phone calls between her and her husband at that time- he was calling to tell her good night, I love you, she said, and would later reveal that Calista was often in the room, listening as he made those calls. His own affair was carried out during the same time that he was working to impeach then President Bill Clinton over his affair with Monica Lewinsky.

Street Talk

it cracks me up that newt wants to claim total credit for all of the positives that happened during Bill Clinton's administration but wants to put all the blame for all of the negatives in this administration on Obama alone. You cannot have it both ways, Newt!

Yeah, i agree. What I find even more fascinating is that the general public cannot see this because we live in a world where people "believe what they hear" versus being able to come up and make their own educated decisions based on the information that is presented.

And our good friend Newt sure wasn't willing to discuss this. It is easy for politicians to attack others, but not to be able to take it when their history is revealed. The poor republican party doesn't have a decent candidate...
