Occupy Movement In Shambles: Cities Moving to Move Protesters Out Amid Crimes And Other Issues

The Occupy movements across the nation are starting to show cracks. From the peaceful movement it started out as, it has now devolved into a loose colleciton of people, some only there for the shelter and free food without the uniting purpose it once had. Now city officials are moving to push the protests out of their cities, citing public health and safety issues that are growing, especially as the temperatures start dipping.

Portland Police Sergeant Pete Simpson told reporters that at least twelve people were arrested there as police worked to clear the Occupy camp at Champman Square. He also responded to questions about their use of riot gear and batons in that city by saying that they were used merely as a precaution. The police had been called in to the camp by Portland Mayor Sam Adams who said that the dramatic increase in crime as well other issues prompted safety concerns. Drug overdoses have increased here as well as in other camps across the nation and criminal elements are now using those camps as hideouts, hoping to blend in and avoid arrests. Adams told the media that he still supported the movement's beliefs but felt that it needed to evolve to continue being effective.

Mayor Mike Nutte of Philadelphia has had to increase the number of police patrolling the areas around Occupy Philadelphia and is also dealing with major health and safety concerns in that city. On Saturday, a young woman was allegedly assaulted but a suspect was arrested in that case. Nutte has said that a multi million dollar renovation project is set to kick off in the area currently occupied by the protesters. Nutte has said that the project will create a thousand jobs for the city.

Nearly twenty people were arrested in Salt Lake City after police there tried to move the Occupiers from a downtown park. That city has had major issues in the past week with four people arrested after a major fight broke out on Wednesday. The following night a man died from what has been ruled to be carbon monoxide poisoning and a drug overdose. In Occupy Oakland, a fatal shooting has prompted authorities to issue a third notice for the protesters to vacate.

In all of the cities, heaps of trash, increased public urination and more are causing serious health concerns. Authorities have issued warnings in all of the cities that there are reports of Occupiers urinating on people from above.
