This is a Canadian story true and true as Canadian as it gets, Zellers was started in 1931, by Walter P Zeller he opened up a chain of thrift stores throughout Southern Ontario. This was the beginning of what turned into the second biggest discount chain in Canada.
This is 2012 and nothing is sacred in this time of insecurity, so they fell to the times to the pressure not sure why or what the sale was all about, but I feel for the ones that do.
This is the fall of a Canadian giant retailer in every sense, think of how it hurts to fall, add some age 25-40 years, the fall is getting worse.
I read the local paper every day I can’t believe the first time I read about the 27,000 + employees that Zeller’s employs throughout the Country; this is where it becomes truly Canadian.
Are you sitting down, maybe you should for this, if you are of weak of heart, I warned you. Canada is adding 27,000 + Canadians to the unemployment line. I say this to be truly Canadian because it seems all too often as of late that an outside corporation has come into Canada with all kinds of promises of employment and stability.
To turn people into food shelter users for the first time in their lives, cutting wages or wanting to cut wages in half or we will move. The threats of these companies, the nerve, you would think signed deals with the government would hold up somehow, as I say truly Canadian.
This is happening all around us here in Southern Ontario, but I fear many others communities have their own horror stories throughout the world and this local story is being lived by others.
Target is the new owners of the 220 stores Zellers once so proudly attach their name too. You would think that they are going to need folks to run these stores so what’s the problem right, logical thought, I would be thinking the same if I didn’t know what I know.
I read that they figure approximately 50-200 employees per store, where these numbers come from no idea. Still sounding good, no one really loses their job they just change employers now that would be the deal you would think that your Government would make for you. Again truly Canadian, no not here, Target says they have no obligation to the Zellers employees.
They will be able to apply for these jobs just like anybody else, this is what comes out of this sale, this is the best my government could do for these people.
Some have put 20-40 years of their lives into these jobs. This is the best they get, a chance at doing their old job at the same place perhaps part-time at part time wages if they passed the interview, what would you do.
It is not as these were high paying jobs to start with the folks who worked their way up through the ranks make barley a living wage for this part of the world. Imagine having your already low wage instead of increase as time goes on; remember if you are lucky, they hire you, to go down.
Living week to week now what, see the huge conundrum our government have put 27,000 more people in for no real good reason, but corporate greed.
Let them go, maybe hire them back part time no benefits lower wage already trained and they should be very happy. Is this smart management on the part of Target and superior bargaining skills when it came to the government’s involvement?
Depends if you are the person looking for the closest food shelter you can walk to, or you are the guy at the top getting a huge bonus for all his hard work in increasing the profit margin and keeping the shareholders happy for this year, screw someone next year.
Ain’t Life Grand??
It seems to be happening more and more which is such a shame
It all comes down to greed and the almighty dollar....what a way for society to treat its own....we humans are a strange bunch...thanks Gayle
Hmm. Had not heard of this 'til now. Guess that the Canadian government's going to have to provide some kind of support in place. I mean, if 27,000 get laid off, there's unemployment benefits, right? Suspect that the corporation may well find their hands full in each community. Folks who have been loyal shoppers may go away at the same time as the employees.
Unemployemnet benefits here in Ontario, it is hit and miss if you qualify here, the rules have changed away from protecting the worker to assisting the payouts, they call this insurance around here, not sure why.....even if they quallify it does not last long and is a very low percentage of your pay....life is going to get hard for many from this.....I know Target is the last place I will be going to shop...thanks Cynthia....
Oh! Did not realize. I missed out on unemployment myself - applied in January this year but I'd waited too long since paying myself. Was unable to work due to a long string of gunk from swine flu to major surgery and unimaginable other stuff too. O well. Now I'm launching on all fronts despite great odds. Hope that Target will turn things around and end up rehiring and retraining all the folks who got displaced. Otherwise you're likely to be followed by most of their other customers eh?
That's really bad news Tim. I feel for the people involved. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah their imediate future is hangin by a thread for sure..thanks Mark
Gob smacking this type happening... what is the world coming too... with unemployment rising throughout the world... another WW recession????
Nothing ever stops when it comes to greed Rob....It goes on, still we have learned nothing from 2008, CEO still getting bonuses and the people getting a bit poorer day by day, a few get rich and many get poor....sustainable I think not.....WW recession...WW revolt.....thanks Rob
