On Saturday June 29th 2013 will be the grand opening of The Psylodelic Gallery (pun intended not misspelled) featuring rock legends Big Brother and the Holding Company (sans Janis Joplin of course) as entertainment. The Psylodelic Gallery is part of "Fur Peace Ranch" (get it now? silo–Psylo) and is the brainchild of former Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and his wife Vanessa Kaukonen.
Jefferson Airplane Moves to Ohio
From my research it looks like Jorma had this idea for a guitar school/camp type of thing. But, when Vanessa got involved she really took the wheel and made "Fur Peace Ranch" something more spectacular. In a video interview I watched (with the both of them) it turns out that Jorma really is a natural born teacher. It has been his passion for the last 15 years or so. (Can you imagine getting guitar lessons from Jefferson Airplane's former guitarist? pretty groovy!!) You know he's been up to many other projects as well, but the man loves to teach guitar.
The Rock Star is A Teaching Star
Jorma had an idea of a camp or site that he could gather students in communion to exchange ideas, play and teach guitar. It turns out that back in 1989 the couple had purchased a plot of land in the Ohio Appalachia's (on a whim). Planning to do something with it someday, this seemed like the perfect spot. Although moving from New York City to the Ohio Appalachia's would be a culture shock, for sure.
Psylodelic Gallery
The heartbeat of the gallery is the amazing poster collection from the giant rock star groups and venues of the decade. Musical shows will include rock legends Big Brother and the Holding Company, Tommy Emmanuel, Country Joe McDonald David Bromberg Quartet, and last but not least Hot Tuna (Jorma's super group after Jefferson Airplane).
Other events such as guest lectures and speakers like Wes Wilson (60s psychedelic poster artist) most popular for his Filmore and Avalon Ballroom rock show posters. Influential icons, writers, musicians, artists and visionaries from the 1960s will be included. These are only a couple of the many events in the gallery and Fur Peace Ranch.
Psylodelic Sit-In
My take on this, is "Darwin The VW Bug" is going to be the hit of the show. From what I can tell, its a permanently affixed VW Beetle Bug car and its being painted on and changed by every visitor passing through. Insightful and clever in many ways.
The Psylodelic Sit-In will also have booths with artists, merchants and vendors from the local area. Also, they will have interactive / family friendly activities. Sounds like tons of fun!
